A good assumption for the Bush years: "They Did It"
Edited on Wed Mar-17-04 03:10 PM by Minstrel Boy
"If John Doe's head splits open and a UFO should fly out, I want you to have expected it."

A favourite line from the film Seven, and better advice I couldn’t give Americans in 2004.

Here’s a good working hypothesis: everything issuing from the Bush White House is a lie. Nothing, either substantial or inconsequential, said by Bush or his thugs has been found true. And if you know this, then you’ll know that the official stories Americans are expected to receive as gospel are nothing but a tapestry of lies.

So when a terrorist attack serves the greater interests of the Grand Imperial Octopus, or a potential threat to the de facto regime in Washington suffers an accidental death, my first assumption will always be, They Did It.

For instance, when more than 100 Shia pilgrims are killed in attacks designed to stir up sectarian hatreds which neither the Shia nor Sunni communities are keen to inflame, and the break-up of Iraq along religious lines into weak vassal states is a longstanding strategic objective of the neo-conservatives, I know who I blame. And when more than 200 Spaniards are killed on the eve of an election, and attacks on civilians historically drive them towards the right, I know who hoped to profit. More so, when I hear the Mighty Wurlitzer spin the Socialist victory into If Al Qaeda attacks the US before the elections, then a vote for Kerry would be a sign of weakness, and even floating the trial balloon of suspending the vote.

Of course, with such a sweeping presumption, sometimes I’ll be wrong. Not every awful thing that happens during the Bush years can be ascribed to the Bush regime. And when I know with some assurance it isn’t, then I’ll change my assessment. But until then I’ll presume them guilty. And all things considered – for instance, the past three years through the looking glass – I think it’s an entirely reasonable presumption.

Because it’s not irrational to believe that the illegitimate rulers of the United States, and presumptive rulers of the world, would stoop to anything to get their way. We need look no further than the public record of lies, death, war and greed, that reaches well past the chimp in the suit and back into the think tanks that fuel the mad ideology of his administration.

What’s at stake here?

Here, at the convergent vanishing points of the age of oil and American soft power, it’s the world that is on the line. And how far will the dark actors playing games go to win it?

What limits constrain them? It’s not likely to be their own shame. And listen to the Mighty Wurlitzer play on, and tell me it will be the media.

Question everything. Expect anything.

And if you do, then when Dick Cheney's head splits open, you might have seen it coming.

4. How far will they go?

They've gone too damned far already. One is forced to wonder how long we can survive at this pace. Can we make it another year? We've gotta hang together if were gonna win this war.
