now is not the time to be showing weakness and organizational flaws in the determination to counter terrorism.

11. I do not contest otherwise...
however this is a major development in the eyes of a terrorist organization. The ablility to influence an election in a democratic society, this is huge. Additionally to influence the foreign policy and military operations, huge.

15. This is what influenced the election:
Please put down the republican talking points for a minute and educate yourself.
This was about a neo-fascist government getting the boot.

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/03/17/international/europe/17SPAI.html

"Voters said they were enraged not only by the government's insistence that the Basque separatist group ETA was responsible, despite mounting evidence to the contrary, but they also resented its clumsy attempts to quell antigovernment sentiment."

...

"That was the last straw for some Spaniards, who said it evoked the nightmare of censorship during the Franco dictatorship little more than a quarter of a century ago."

8. i hope you are not serious
Just because the people (NOT the goernment) objected to a war which they knew was based on lies and a grab for oil does not make them bow to terrorists. On the contrary, they had made their point clear before the war and are now telling bushco and the other a...holes who joined this war that they are not willing to pay the price for something they never wanted in the first place
good for them

13. I hope you're joking
If you're not joking, could you explain what the invasion of Iraq has to do with fighting terrorism? Are you implying that Spain should keep troops in Iraq against the will of it's people just to spite Al Queda?

There was no proven connections between Hussein's regime and international terrorism.

19. That's a Bushist talking point. And it's not rational.
It is not rational to claim that because the socialists won, the terrorists won. In fact that is not what the Spanish people have been saying. Their vote was intended to signal rejection of the Aznar's complicity in the failure of a war in Iraq/on terror.

Would terrorism have lost if the Spanish people voted for Aznar, despite his having blatantly lied to them about who was responsible for the attacks in Madrid, despite his having dragged Spain into Iraq against the overwhelming will of the Spanish people?

Bush is more a terrorist than anyone. How many Iraqis have been killed for the right's greed? The terrorist did not come from Iraq. Wrong country wrong war.

5. I love this quote
"Fighting terrorism with bombs, with operations of 'shock and awe', with missiles, that does not combat terrorism it only generates more radicalism," the 43-year-old Socialist leader said.

"The way to fight terrorism is with the rule of law, with international legislation, with intelligence services," he said. "This is what the international community should be talking about."

How arrogant (and typical) for our "president" to expect Zapatero to go back on his campaign pledge, defy the majority of Spaniards, and follow *'s lead. This guy is no Blair.

18. earth first - go read Juan Cole right now! Spain will refocus the wrath
of the world toward anti-terrorism. We've spent too long being distracted in Iraq with regime change and nation building.

Here's Cole's link:

Did al-Qaeda win the Spanish elections?

To show he really means business, I'm surprised he didn't say "by the end of April". Waiting until the end of June, IMO, is pretty much in line with when the occupiers plan to transition Gov't, etc...
