2. I loved Stossel's philosophy of unregulated monopolies
i.e., monopolies don't need any regulations because they take care of themselves because of competition. Competition with whom? Duh?

4. Stossel wouldn't answer
which government programs should be cut. He just had his cutesy "Stossel Rule"...before you pass a new law, you have to repeal two past ones. Stewart suggested sodomy. Stossel is like Bush. He has an agenda, he sets out to prove what he's already decided (whatever benefits big business) and he ignores any evidence which doesn't support his preconceived mission. He's a whore. And, though glib, not very smart. Stewart had him pinned on every move.

6. I saw it too...Stossel said government has grown from 5% to 40% of
the economy, but failed to say the economy is shrinking and the population is growing. Also, Jon made a good point when they talked about free media accuracy. Jon said they edit their features by giving the subjects a chance to have their say then deciding what to cut out. Sounds fair to me. :eyes: Jon's editing, of course, was, and is, an ongoing joke and is about equivalent to Stossel's. (I shudder to think that I used to actually like Jon Stossel before I woke up. tsk tsk)

Righwingers are against wasteful spending except the $87 billion for Iraq based on a 50 page outline. That was great. John Kerry should be ashamed that he didn't vote for $87 billion without GAO oversight.

30. His 170 years of small government is a lie too
Edited on Wed Mar-17-04 02:08 PM by SoCalDem
1776 + 170 = 1946

Government was NOT small in 1946..

What his real beef is , is this.. He sees no problem with taking OUR tax dollars for a huge military, but does not believe that being a citizen of the US entitles a person to ANYTHING..

The "real" money if this country is inherited..good-ole-boy money..

They people who get a check every week or every other week, will NEVER get rich, unless they win lotto..

The ones who have the REAL money , spend a lot of time and mooney to make sure that they never part with it..

It's like someone who invites 20 people to a dinner party, and then locks them in the bathroom, while he eats it all.. There WAS enough for everyone, but one person decided that he wanted it all..

Maybe when he has eaten his fill and hidden some for later, he will let some of them out of the bathroom to "feast" on some leftovers, but some will remain locked in that bathroom forever..:(

9. Why is Stossel still even on the tube?
The guy fixed a 20/20 report on pesticides to agree with his right wing agenda. He got busted on it. Yet, he still gets air time like he's an honorable person.

Stossel is a dishonest piece of shit.

Go to http://www.makethemaccountable.com/hall/StosselJohn.htm and page down to the bottom, and you'll see this story:
Stossel can't get a break

By Paula Bernstein , Reuters, 8/16/2000

NEW YORK (Variety) - John Stossel's credibility is no longer up for grabs.

The ABC News correspondent was on display this week when an eBay customer auctioned off the reporter's ''credibility'' in the wake of his inaccurate ''20/20'' report on the organic food industry.

The posting advertised that ''for an unlimited time only, John Stossel's credibility is open to the highest bidder! You can join the ranks of Monsanto, DuPont, ConAgra and Procter & Gamble and have your own piece of John!''

The anti-Stossel poster was presumably making a dig at the fact that Stossel has collected substantial fees for speaking to large corporations whose side he has also reported on. Before it was yanked from the site, Stossel's credibility drew four bids. The highest was a scant $2.25.

14. Bravo, Jon Stewart

He has a way of making a fool look like a fool. And Stossel is as big a fool as they come. :)

Ever since the show where Stossel said with a straight face that women couldn't do math as well as men because they weren't made that way, I have not been able to look at him without breaking out in laughter. I guess they gave me my degree for my winning smile.

I loved the part where Stossel said Microsoft got so big because they were delivering us great software, that was hilarious. Stossel, hon, don't make it so easy for us dumb women to show you up - you proved you know NOTHING about software if you think that absolute CRAP Gates force fed the public is "great."

22. I like Microsoft software
I don't have a problem with it and it has enabled me to make a living since day one. There are a few thins I would change about their company and their donating habits, but their software, along with Adobe's software and a few other companies, has allowed millions of people like me to maintain a small business all the way through the Bush recession.

I say hat's off to the developers and people who make the products and "hiss boo" to its lawyers, marketers and the corporate borg.

16. Stossel is a rightwing Jerk
Government "waste fraud and abuse" is the last refuge of the lazy, cheap shot journalist.

After 20 years of republicanism there is probably no government program, outside of defense, that is anywhere near properly staffed funded to accomplish its mission.

That was the point of republicanism in the first place. The only way to kill the "beast" was to first defund it, understaff it, and pass laws to hobble it, so that later, they could point to the program, call it a failure, and shut it down.

At one time we had schools that worked, agricultural inspection programs that safeguarded the food supply, environmental protection that enforced laws, child protection that did not lose kids, social services that tended modestly to the needs of the poor, the handicapped and the mentally incapacitated. And on and on. 30 years of dixiecrat/conservative republican government later and government is seen as ineffective. This did not happen by accident or overnight.

What is a cheap shot journalist to do? Find some underfunded, understaffed and underpaid civil servant and point out how they are not meeting high expectations.

Do they ever look at the inside deals and corporate welfare occurring at the higher levels? No, that would take too much work.

I don't really know much about Stossel but Jon certainly gave him the opportunity to show how stupid Stossel really is. I wasn't sure who he was at first, but I could tell Jon Stewart doesn't particularly care for him. The man seemed clueless that the audience didn't care for his ah, message either. Outside of his protective environment, he may not know what the real world is like. :D

on edit, I misspelled the poor man's name.
