Why is WalMart giving $10 Million to a school "choice" organisation?
The Walton Family Trust gave $10 Million to this (voucher) group in 2001.

They say on the site that they aren't seeking to use tax payer money for vouchers. Really?

This Theodore J. Forstmann character is the man in charge of "Campaign for America's Children", the Walton $10,000,000, so I think what we have here is a failure to communicate...

http://www.motherjones.com/web_exclusives/special_reports/mojo_400/210_forstmann.html

What's sad is that beside Bill "Just one more pull!" Bennett the site shows a couple of, I assume, well meaning Dems in the "Who we are" segment.

Thoughts?

4. Don't you love the way the site denies that they're pushing vouchers?
What a hoot.

2. Why? To advance their beloved right-wing agenda
They want, they need a large underclass of unskilled, undereducated workers to draw from at will. Which is exactly what they'll get if school vouchers are put in place.

3. because the Waltons are conservative
(didn't you watch the show ;-) )

It's about helping to destroy the public education system. If they really just wanted to give parents "choice" they could have used that $10 million to help fund private scholarships to kids so they could attend private schools.

5. Just one more reason to NOT shop there.
How many do people need?

OT; I used to watch that show as a child and don't recall the "Waltons" being all that republican...

7. that was just a very bad joke.
I don't think they were all that republican, especially in the reunion shows when their kids were a journalist, artists, a female doctor, etc.

6. He sees $$$
Walton is the director of the TesseracT Group (a for-profit corporation that manages charter and public schools). Most voucher supporters seek the destruction of public schools, either because they can profit from privitization or they see public schools as evil (Falwell and Robertson).

8. Is there a tax write-off attached to their donation?
In Florida, corporations can donate directly to private schools and get a tax-write off.

9. OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH, this makes me so mad!
Vouchers are just plain anti-American. The founders of the United States ensured that public schools and libraries would be built so voters would be educated and informed.

Sprawl-Mart knows that if they do this, they will have even more of the hearts and minds of the lower working classes. Here in Phoenix, the lwc has become convinced that charter and private schools are the way out of poverty and crime. Yet the teachers in these schools usually don't even have a high school degree, much less a college degree.

I have a seething hatred for Sprawl-Mart. This was the last nail in their coffin, as far as I'm concerned. Click on this link:

Casa Grande, or "Big House," one of the largest and most mysterious prehistoric structures ever built in North America. Casa Grande Ruins, the nation's first archeological preserve, protects the Casa Grande and other archeological sites within its boundaries.

Guess what is right across a small highway, as the crow flies, .4 miles away?

11. I HATE SPRAWL-MART WITH A PASSION!
Edited on Wed Jul-09-03 09:12 AM by ima_sinnic
screw the richer-than-Bill-Gates greed-head inbred Beverly Hillbillies Walton clan, too stingy to pay the poor Chinese children who make the CRAP they sell even the Chinese minimum wage. I haven't shopped there for a couple of years now. I don't care if I have to drive 2 extra miles to buy my Hanes for Her underpants, the only thing I enter Sprawl-Mart for is to leave a turd in their toilet.

13. Always know that if Wal-Mart is giving money.....
there is some serious, sinister strings attached. A truely un-American, greedy mega-corporation who has never had a generous thought for anybody or anything except themselves.
