The Fix is In! (Florida touchscreen voting)
This is not a dupe of the NYT article.

I happen to catch part of "Florida Face to Face" this morning on my local PBS station.

The guest was Glenda Hood - Florida Secretary of State.

The subject was the upcoming presidential election and touchscreen voting machines.

What she had to say was absolutely shocking and I will try to repeat it the best I can...

<start>

"We have the upmost confidence in our new trouchscreen machines"

"Our local election supervisors agree there is no need for a paper trail (or receipts) from touchscreen devices"

"If a recount is required THERE WILL BE NO PRINTOUT AUDIT OF THE MACHINES".

"Recounts will not be necessary as electronic voting machines MAKE NO MISTAKES".

"Some people are distributing false information about touchscreen voting."

<end>

and more that I can't totally recall...

I checked the FFF website to see if a transcript or tape was available - none were available.

Did anyone else see this????

Did anybody tape/TIVO it????

If so, can you provide a transcript???

3. Let us know
if you find a transcript. This is just amazing. The information is out there, we all read it but they keep this line up. I don't know how they can live with themselves.

4. what utter BS!

"Recounts will not be necessary as electronic voting machines MAKE NO MISTAKES".

recounts are mandated in close elections.

will these infallable machines make sure there are no close elections?

any voting system that makes a recount impossible should be illegal.

paper ballots. period.

5. That hag was on Lou Dobbs this week lying her ass off..
She actually said there are no voting machines right now that can produce a paper ballot!! Everything she says in defense of BBV is a complete and utter lie. Yes, unless someone can stop them, Wexler perhaps? The Fix is in!

7. Yes, isn't it wonderful how George will win Florida again?
Why did you even imagine that Florida was in play.

Count it out now. Jeb would die of shame if Georgie lost. Or Barbara would kill him. One or the other.

10. what are floridians for fair elections (whether dem or rep)
doing to make sure there are some valid exit polls?

if there is not paper audit, then there should be exit polls to see if the voting machines are coming anywhere near reflecting the actual votes at the polls.

this needs to be done as a bipartisan effort, if at all possible, and we know we can no longer rely on the polling firm that suddenly couldn't validate their reports during the past two election frauds.

11. No mistakes?
In the entire history of the human race, every enterprise that has ever been attempted is littered with mistakes. Is she a fool, or does she think we are?

12. Go to the PBS web site
http://www.pbs.org/

and then hit TV schedules on the top to get a link for your local PBS. They usually take twenty-four hours to get a transcript up.

13. Voting is like a contract
Edited on Sun Mar-14-04 10:02 PM by RedEagle
You review and sign a contract to indicate you agree with everything on it. It's on paper.

If you can't review your vote- ON A TANGIBLE SOURCE DOCUMENT- your rights are violated.

There is no proof of your vote. There is no proof the machine is correct.

I think Glenda Hood should personally put up a bond for each machine in Florida of $10,000, that they are accurate and will not fail, for ANY reason- whether it can be blamed on poll workers or not. After all, if the machines are infallible, they couldn't be affected by outside factors.

Put your money where your mouth is, Ms. Hood.

16. but also not like a contract

contracts are signed, endorsed legally by one or more parties and ballots must be individual and anonymous.

it is more like witnessing a contract and approving it without fixing your name to it.

after the voter verifies 'this is my intent' and places it in a secure 'box' it becomes utterly anonymous....

at first I liked the 'contract' line but realized it leads to the "YOU DEMS WILL BE SELLING YOUR VOTES" canard...

17. Literally taken, I suppose
Yes, all rules for ballot secrecy must remain, you don't sign the contract. But you do enter into a contract every time you vote. It's one of the few you make with government, albeit anonymously.

You have a right to witness the accurate execution of that contract, signed or not, because it's going into a ballot box and you can't pull it out later to verify it.

You have a right to see that a real copy exists of that vote, on a physical document, not just what the computer screen tells you.

You can't witness what an electron does. You can't witness how the program interprets your selection unless it prints it out for you to see.

14. The whole point of the manufactured 'chad' fiasco was to ram these
machines down everyone's throats. This entire thing was planned by the GOP...the bogus ballots, the BS about chads, the white collar GOP thug uprising....all designed not just to steal the 2000 election, but to ensure their touch screen machines would be installed within a year or two in every state in the US.
As usual, brilliant in their evil.
