What city?

How many people will be with you?

What will your sign have on it?

Not sure if there is any "use," but when there is an accounting of this time period in U.S. history and people ask, what did you do? I want to be able to say proudly that I stood fought.

What say the rest of you?

City: Portland, OR

How many people?: Thousands, including my wife, son, daughter, daughter's boyfriend, uncle, and dog.

Sign? I'm going with this:

Side A (for the local media if I get on TV)

Side B (how I really feel)

Wild horses nor mounted police could keep us away. It's the one-year anniversary of my father's death. He was a WWII vet who hated war, with stories to back it up.

It's too important to miss. I hope everyone from
Fort Greely, Alaska

to McMurdo Station in Antarctica

and every point in between shows up in their communities, just as we all did last year.

48. Lansing, Michigan, also, obviously

Although I live in Kalamazoo, I'll definitely be coming to Lansing, which will, after all, be a state-wide demonstration. I think the MECAWI folks are going to have buses going down from Detroit. I'm not sure what other cities have anti-war coalitions mobilizing for Lansing.

It should be interesting.

Anyway, I don't know what any sign I may carry will say on it, but something that points out that Bush vs. Kerry is a choice between war criminals with Iraqi blood on their hands would be nice. }(

Shit, am I still allowed to point that out on DU?

57. Sounds good
Also doesn't hurt that it's general enough that we can use it for all kinds other demonstrations that may come up too, not just Iraq-specific ones.

BTW, I saw the nightly news on CNN tonight joining Fox in spinning Aznar's defeat at the polls as a "victory for Al Queda." Just shows us what a dazzling array of choice between perspectives you get with "free market" media...on Chanel 5 (Fox), I can watch a barely literate fascist tell me that the election of the Spanish social dems was a victory for Al Queda, on Channel 34 (CNN), I can watch a well spoken fascist tell me that the election of the Spanish social dems was a victory for Al Queda.

Three cheers for the free press.

63. Good Old Canada
Just re-watched the classic South Park episode, "Not Without My Anus", about Saddam Hussein's attempt to take over Canada, today.

Actually, I notice that TV shows in general seem to find something incredibly funny about large groups of people singing the Canadian national anthem together--beyond the South Park episode just mentioned, there was an episode of the Simpsons that ended with every one joining hands and singing it together (the rest of the episode had nothing to do with Canada, it was the "pre-teen braves" episode) and (not that this is a show I regularly watch, I just happened to catch this particular episode) an episode of "That 70s Show" where the central characters make a beer run to Canada, on the way back the obviously foreign one can't produce a passport, and they convince the Mounties to let them go by singing the Canadian national anthem together in a stirring manner.

Oh well, it's 2:20, I just finished entering a couple of hundred grades into the computer and I'm free-associating here, so I'd best go to bed.

same place as last year, Lansing, Michigan. It looks like we might luck out on the weather this year, too - as opposed to last year, when I had to wear thermal pants under jeans, two sweatshirts + sweater and coat, two pair of gloves, two pair heavy socks and Thinsulate boots - the works. I was a bit too warm during the march, actually, but it was a mistake to stop moving for any length of time!

I am very much looking forward to next Saturday - my 14-1/2-year-old daughter and her friends are going with us, this year.

I am planning to make several signs. One will have a great big pretzel on the front and one word on the back: LIAR. I saw someone here had the sigline "Outsource BUSH." I like that, and might do it too. also: "It's the Jobs, Stupid."

I had though of a few more, but they escape me at the moment.

61. Should we have a DU meeting place?
It's at Madison Sq., right? What time? I have relatives in town but might try to be there for an hour or so. We could arrange a meeting place if there is interest. rbnyc arranged the last one at Times Sq. in March. At the Feb. on there was no way to meet - we lost the people who had arrived with us - it was an incredible mass of people!

I'm thinking maybe meet over by Whole Foods? Or someplace else about a block away.

22. Chomping at the bit here in Toronto.
It's been too long since the world's been in the streets. A criminal war has become a criminal occupation, and though it's become the "new normal", I'm even more outraged than I was last year. And last year I was fucking furious.

For a sign, I'm considering a picture of 12-year old Ali Abbas, and the caption "Congratulations on Disarming Iraq."

Also in Ottawa, the NDP candidate in Ottawa South (ex-Minister of Finance John Manley's old riding) is Monia Mazigh (married to Maher Arar, who was imprisoned and tortured in Syria after being deported there by the US), and I imagine she'll be in evidence.

26. This is NOT good
Problems developing in Chicago. Just checked the Indymedia site for more details and apparently the city is denying a permit to march. Well, yes and no.

Mayor Richard Daley sounded a conciliatory note Wednesday toward peace activists who clashed with police last year and want to stage another downtown demonstration March 20.

But Daley firmly defended the city's decision to deny a permit for a protest to begin at Michigan Avenue and Pearson Street and end at Federal Plaza. City officials said a rally following that route would severely disrupt traffic.

<snip>

Daley said officials offered anti-war protesters the opportunity to take an alternative route that would disrupt traffic less for their new demonstration. Officials suggested beginning the protest at Washington Square Park, 901 N. Clark St., and proceeding south on Clark into the Loop.

The protesters rejected the offer, saying they wanted to begin at the spot where many of them were arrested last year. The city allows other marches in the same area, said Andy Thayer, the activist who applied for a permit for the March 20 rally.

http://chicago.indymedia.org/newswire/display/36951/index.php

I've been down the route the city is proposing and the organizers are right, it's dead on Saturday and you're just shouting out to buildings. Even at the smaller protests after the war had started, there were at least 1,000 people out there. How would it be less disruptive to stick that many people on the sidewalk?

Should be interesting.

47. thanks for the heads up
wherever the chicago march or protest is, i will be there.
i will be selling buttons. i will probably print up some signs to give away.
here is a favorite of mine-

Every gun that is fired, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hope of its children. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than thirty cities. It is two electric plants, each serving a town of sixty thousand population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete highway. We pay for a single fighter plane with a half-million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than eight thousand people. This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging upon a cross of iron.... aspire to this: the lifting, from the backs and from the hearts of men, of their burden of arms and fears - so that they may find before them a golden age of freedom and of peace.
Dwight D. Eisenhower, "The Chance for Peace," April 1953
Speech writers Emmet John Hughes and C. D. Jackson

people do read it all, you do have a lot of time on your hands at protests. at a march in d.c. someone was passing this out on postcards. this button started out as a sign, and this march inspired me to start making buttons, so i always like to take this along, also.

There is a big demo planned. We were at the one in Rittenhouse Square before the war started and there were about 2000 people at that one.

74. Tie your cloth streamers near the top of the flag.
(If you have one of those cheap plastic flags, reinforce the hole you make with scotch tape.)They should be as long as the flag itself is, so they will not touch the ground.

95. Because many of us were protesting the invasion
prior to its start. Much of what we said was the case — no WMDs, much loss of life, drain on treasury, civil unrest in Iraq — has come to pass.

The administration is trying to "celebrate" it as a good thing. We are simply going to be exercising our First Amendment rights to demonstrate that we don't agree. You don't support the troops by leading them needlessly to slaughter, lacking the proper equipment, and refuse to provide them with decent benefits upon their return.

You don't support the U.S. by raiding the treasury to build a new empires for corporated interests.
If people initially had mixed feelings, I think even more are having misgivings about it now, particularly with the growing sentiment that the Bush administration lied the U.S. and its allies into starting a war.

So, I think many more will be joining us. There will be a lot of anger and demands for peace in the streets on Saturday.

So, how do YOU feel about the invasion and about protests?

I'm still not sure what I will pass out on Saturday.

If I were carrying a sign it would say "I TOLD YOU SO".

It kind of reminds me of the piles of shoes exhibited in the Holocaust Museum in D.C. The image is so evocative — walking a mile in someone's shoes, thinking of the life attached to the pair of shoes.

Don't know how many will be there but I've told a few friends who indicated they'd meet there.

The sign...a stylised picture of * as pinnochio on one side..."Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld...Axis of weasles" on the other.

I won't be. There doesn't seem to be anything in St. Louis. Except a train to Chicago :eyes:

I work on Saturdays, anyway.

Let's see some more hands! :bounce:

Also, do we have any more sign ideas? Sometimes it's hard to come up with the pics and graphics.
