I see many of the same threads lingering on the front page for two or three days.

Some of these threads only have ten or so responses, but they hang around on the front page anyway.

Is it because the authors of these threads donate to DU?

Check the times of the latest posts in those threads, and they'll be more recent than the threads below them.
