ABC World News tonight called, doing BBV tonight (with me)
Using taped footage from the bit with Good Morning America -- we actually taped about an hour's worth, and they said they'd be using it elsewhere as time goes on.

TV tally so far, we are at least 14 national TV on this issue in the last eight days. CNN leads the pack. This story has legs.

issue..

Everyone who has an embezzler working for them says that things are fine...UNTIL they catch the embezzler.. It's always AFTER the fact, when things are found out..
Things were FINE at Enron & Arthur Anderson, UNTIL we knew what was going on..

We cannot afford another "oopsie election"..

People spend millions of dollars on campaigns and they deserve the position they won... Georgia's poll numbers would suggest otherwise..

74. Guys, LET'S HELP BEV FIGHT, 'eh?
Tomorrow morning, first thing, fresh on the heels of this - note the TOLL FREE number in my sig line and USE IT!!! CALL SOMEBODY IN CONGRESS AND/OR THE SENATE. CALL ANYBODY IN CONGRESS AND/OR THE SENATE. CALL YOUR PEOPLE THERE. CALL SOMEBODY ELSE'S PEOPLE THERE.

PLEASE! DO IT!

I am sorry to shout, again, but I know of no other way to push the point as strongly as I feel it and know it. PUBLIC PRESSURE IS HAVING AN EFFECT! Don't believe me? Just consider the progression of the 9/11 hearing blockage/stonewalling by the bushies that's been caving in, step by step. First the White House refuses everything. Then they say okay they'll meet with the commission and then Dennis Hastert says no. Then he has a change of heart. Then they try to set limits. Then those limits are backed off. And every time Scott McClellan opens his mouth, he's described as "backing away" yet again from some stupid-ass stance the White House took that everybody else is against. Just consider the story arc here. The difference is public pressure. The difference is people speaking out. And our reps becoming emboldened because now it's no longer taboo to speak out and ask questions. And more people start speaking out and asking more questions. And all of it can no longer simply be ignored by the media.

It's snowballing. Not as fast or on as profound a scale as we'd like, but this train is moving. Finally. And what made the difference is public pressure. They thought we didn't care. They thought we were afraid and intimidated. Well, some of us (not counting those of us on DU) were afraid and intimidated. But that's changed and continues to change. That's so yesterday. So last year. NOW, people are questioning and not taking the crap at face value anymore. Which is as it should be. It's not a runaway train yet. It's really just started to move. But the fact is - IT'S MOVING. AND IT'S BECAUSE OF PUBLIC PRESSURE.

If they think you don't care, they won't either. Well, guess what? They've begun to realize that a WHOLE LOT of us DO care. And care deeply! And that can't be ignored. Particularly in an election year. It's time to SEIZE THE TIME. The time is now. The call is ready to make - first thing in the morning. Let 'em know you're onto 'em, and onto this. And that something has to be done. BECAUSE we're onto them, and onto this. THEY NEED TO KNOW THIS, and to know they're being held accountable for this. In an election year.

DO IT. PLEASE!

Do you mention The Voter Confidence Act when talk to reporters? You've said it won't solve all the problem, and it won't, but it would be a good first-step.

Tonight's ABC World News piece has already started when I tuned in, but I didn't see any mention of The Voter Confidence Act, HR.2239, during the piece.

36. I did pitch HR 2239 in the interview, but they usually cut things
pretty aggressively. In this case, they cut 1 hour's footage down to 2 minutes, typical for TV news. The shoot actually took almost four hours.

I am still learning on the sound byte timing. Got kind of a handle on it this morning, though it may not have showed -- just put 6 one-line concepts into my head remembering each with a letter, and in the 4-minute segment, of which 2 minutes of course went to the other guest and the host, I actually got 5 of the 6 in.

I need to get quickies memorized for the newest talking points -- I am really kicking myself for not handling that nearly as well as I could have, given the openings she gave me.

6. Talking to voters over the last couple weeks, I've talked to more than
one voter who knows about this issue. In fact, I've talked to several. That's the good news. The bad news is that the people I talked to who know about the issue also said, 'why bother voting?'

So, you should incorporate in the long and short version of your message a reminder that this doesn't mean people shouldn't vote. And, if they don't vote, it's more likely that politicians who like EV will stay in office. Remind people to both (1) VOTE, and (2) petition their local governments to get rid of bad machines.

86. Good and important point, AP -- same here, today
I was on an African-American radio show in Louisiana and the discussion came up "why vote?"

Look, you gotta vote, if only to show that it is more important to you than ever to have a vote.

You've gotta vote, if only to snoop and check up on them at the polls. Maybe it will be YOU that sees the security breach that becomes this issues "Three Mile Island."

You've gotta vote, if only to register a protest -- heck, do a write-in vote for YOURSELF, if nothing else.

Or vote for the most obscure candidate on the ballot, and then monitor the results for your precinct. If that vote doesn't show up, you've got 'em on miscounting.

Now, more than ever, you gotta vote.

Thanks, AP, that's a sound byte I need to work on and a message we need to make sure I get in there consistently.

Bev

93. Thanks. It just made no sense to me when I routinely heard people say...
...that.

My feeling, personally, is that it makes me want to vote more. Hell, BBV makes me want to spend ALL DAY at the polling booth and to camp out in the SoS's office until they change their policies.

Hearing people say that made me wonder if there's some right wing talking point going around on this issue, or if my response to BBV isn't the natural, inate response to this information.

They used this "if you question the system people won't vote" talking point a lot last spring. Now they are using these two:

"There has never been an instance where the vote on these machines has been a problem" (Hah! See http://www.blackboxvoting.org/bbv_chapter-2.pdf)

"These machines are much more accurate than previous systems" (Hah! M.I.T./CalTech study showed that the only modern system that lost MORE votes than punch cards is touch-screens.)

10. Hey Bev, what is the procedure for replacing a spoiled ballot
with an electronic voting machine?

I just heard two callers on the Randi Rhodes show say that they voted in Jupiter, Florida, the machine skipped the national primary (which was supposed to come first on the ballot apparently)and skipped directly to the municipal elections, then wouldn't go back to the national ones. The people working there said there was nothing they could do about it! (One also said there was no sample ballot on the machine.) Didn't old Florida law say you could get up to three ballots if you spoiled them along the way?

87. In Maryland, a machine skipped a key race also
and the election person said there was no way to remedy it.

The voter was so adamant that finally, she/he persuaded the election officials to look at the machine, and they found that it was not showing that race at all. But here's what's really disturbing: During the troubleshooting, the poll worker asked the voter if he/she (sorry, forgot which) had used the "magnify" button. The voter said no. The election worker said "because we know sometimes this happens if you use that function."

Basically, they KNEW the machines would miscount in certain circumstances, and did nothing to protect the voter's vote.

DON'T WANT NO BLACK BOXES CRUNCHING NUMBERS
I WANT A BALLOT YOU CAN COUNT
AND RECOUNT,
AND RECOUNT, BABY...
I WANT A PIECE OF PAPER IN MY HAND
BECAUSE THE VAPOR
THEY HAVE PLANNED FOR....
GIVES ME THE BLUES
I GOT THE ‘‘WHERE IS MY VOTE?' BLUES
AT LEAST YOU CAN SEE A HANGING 'CHAD'
IF WE DON'T FIGHT WE CAN BE HAD
I GOT THE BBV BLUES

43. Better yet: They're standing up to Diebold's lawyers
Edited on Tue Mar-09-04 08:37 PM by BevHarris
From what I understand, the Diebold lawyers are doing a full-court press, and they are really attacking the RABA report investigators.

I can tell you this:

1) Diebold has hired a crisis control firm called PSI -- Public Strategies Inc., I think, something like that

2) Diebold has discussed a budget of as much as a million bucks for eight weeks, for legal work alone

3) Diebold is also looking at its options in case of criminal prosecution for its violations of the law.

4) Diebold plans to, or already has, lied to the California Secretary of State about its smart card software. It plans to, or has already, said that it uses off the shelf smart card software and hardware, when in fact it uses a customized and uncertified program called VCprogrammer.

We shall see what we shall see. When I spoke to ABC, they are resolute that they will NOT be bullied by a bunch of Diebold lawyers.

Good news, for us. Yeah, Diebold, you monitor this. Guess what? If it's not too late, you might want to rethink that strategy to tell the California S.O.S. bullshit when it comes to your smart cards. You know, the ones that didn't work very well last Tuesday.

from an IT professional

he said there are TWO kinds of people who are in favor of touchscreen voting, without a paper trail:

1) crooked politicians
2) IDIOTS!

btw, CBS did a harder hitting segment on BBV, showing Wertheimer and somebody else, who said it took TEN seconds to break into a system, change votes, erase their trail

also talked about the reprogrammable smart card

some other stuff, too, about Diebold, whereas Tapper merely quoted Diebold as saying everything was OK, and left it at that?

did I get that part about Tapper right?

did anybody else see the CBS segment? the two in tandem are excellent

39. Heads up for Seattleites -- The cover story for the Seattle Weekly
on the Internet (I think SeattleWeekly.com) tomorrow and on the newsstands Thursday, has the BBV issue so big and bold that the cover shot for this week's publication, from what I hear, is me inside a black box -- and they did a full fledged photo shoot with Andy too, FINALLY!

George Howland and the Weekly managing editor have really been committing to investigative work on this story now.

Obviously, the story isn't about me, or actually, Andy either. In the PR business, one of the ways to get press coverage is by doing a "profile piece" -- that's because people like to put a face to a story, and the more complex it is, the more they want a friendly face behind it, someone who is an ordinary person.

I resisted doing profile pieces for a long time, because they tended to use them to distract from the issue. Now, however, they are using them to bring attention to the real issues, of security and auditability. Therefore, I agreed to do some of them.

As the story gets it legs, things will change from overview pieces and profile pieces, often shown only with strong news tie-ins, like during election week, into niche pieces. These are the detail stories that cover specific aspects. That's what will ultimately be needed to bring all of America up to speed on this.

Remember, all you DU-ers, what a learning curve we all went through during the past year? Most of America is just beginning that. The most important thing -- and one of the key things Andy and I were doing in the "Gonna Get a Visit" segment to New York City -- was to tip this into national TV news coverage.

Now, back to work on the next steps. :)

Bev

91. Yup. 22 factual inaccuracies and a personal political agenda
Democratic Underground is "left wing." Common Dreams is "left wing."

And the inaccuracies are so numerous that I only submitted 1 as a correction request -- I don't have the time to make corrections on every paragraph.

But here are examples:

- He says I am 53. I am 52.
- He says my web site is BlackBoxVoting.com. It is BlackBoxVoting.org (the other one belongs to David Allen).
- He misquotes a passage in my book, changing the wording, and also cuts the sentence in half so that it appears to say something different.
- He says I drive a certain vehicle -- but I had told him this was my husband's car; he quotes a bumper sticker that was on the car when we bought it, and (even though I described the specific reason we kept the bumper sticker on, which has to do with toting a lot of kids around, he quotes it in a gun nut context. Neither me nor my husband likes guns.
- He mischaracterizes the area I live in
- He does an opinionated hack job on Andy, and it is also factually incorrect.

These things may sound trivial, but when there are 22 of them, you've got a reporter who is more interested in writing a point of view than getting the facts right.

Oh, and given the nature of this thread -- he is still characterizing my work as "internet" and is unsure that it will ever go mainstream.

But the photos are pretty good. Thumbs up on the photographer, but this reporter has not shown himself to be responsible enough to get any more inside info from me.

:grouphug:

Loved reading the thread. I just got home from work and I'm on the West Coast.

What time will it be on again?

Also, help me with this silly question someone: Diabold is a GW supporter, isn't there some conflict of interest here? How do we know that they are fair to all people? Is this matter in Court somewhere?

I'm sure I missed the explanation but it just seems like another Halliburton situation to me. How can they get the contract and so blatantly support one specific party?

Andy,

I just wanted to let you know that I chatted with a friend today who is a union organizer, and I mentioned both Bev's book and your candidacy to him. He was very intrigued, and said once his union gets to the place where they are looking over candidates to decide who to endorse, he will give you a serious looking at for possible consideration. He said he has no use for the likes of Laura Ruderman who is also running for the S.o.S position!

1) Okay, if a bank has never been robbed, does that mean you don't have to worry about shutting the vault at night? How about "this building has never burned down, so all this fire drill and fire extinguisher stuff is a waste of time.

2) Done right, there will not be *any* evidence. That's the problem.

48. Tonight---and my heart sank
I watched a story on this on CBS (?--I think)news tonight. Anyway, they ended by being very concerned but telling us that unfortunately nothing can be done about it this presidential election cycle. In other words, they have this covered. They can pretend it's unfixable in such a short time but, of course, will take care of it "later". I just don't think this is looking good at all. (PS--did see you several times today--that dried up Sec. of State didn't much like you, did she?).

That's exactly right. Throw out the machines. Contract 3 local printers to print ballots. Get your ballot boxes out of storage. If you threw them out, buy new ballot boxes and deduct the cost from your SOS's paycheck. Buy a bunch of pens. Request from the general public observers from each party for each precinct. Count the damn ballots by hand in each precinct. Call in the results and also post them on the precinct door. You'll be done well before the sun comes up.

62. Bev--a thought--can you contact Kerry??
Obviously - from today - this thing IS all over the news so it can't be seen as "conspiracy theory" stuff any longer. Wouldn't it be grand if Kerry expressed concern over it, particularly in Florida. It would then put the Florida officials in a position of screaming "that no such thing could happen", blah, blah; BUT would also give them the willies that they damn well better not screw around this time. Kerry needs to so focus on these slime and distrusting these slime that they are scared shitless to do anything. How about a try at contacting the Kerry camp????? It's going to take him to get the nation really, really riled up. Obviously Bush isn't going to do it.

LOTS of good stuff!

OK folks, don't let them get by with the, "It's too late for paper theme."

Hey, it's never too late to defend democracy!

Write the networks and tell them you want paper in '04.

Ditch the touch screens without the voter verified paper ballots, only paper in '04.

Isn't democracy worth a little paper? Put out a call for citizen auditors. There ought to be enough BBV types around by now!

Push your senators on S. 1980. It ain't perfect, but maybe when it gets to the floor, a few good guys can beef it up a little, and it's going to look very BAD for anyone who doesn't agree to that?

And if you like these results, help us all out with a donation. It doesn't happen by magic. There are filing and copy fees for litigation, phone bills to pay, you get the idea, you know the organizations.

84. Now HERE's an unsung hero: RedEagle has done awesome work
along with HarmonyGuy, and some others whose names you may not know. RedEagle was the second person I communicated with about the voting issue, way back when, shortly after I read the Lynn Landes article that interested me in this issue in the first place.

She kept emailing me first class research -- amazing little "catches" -- and for the longest time, I just quietly hit "reply" and "thanks" -- until I finally met this dynamic redhead in a public meeting about a year ago.

She's great. People like me (and you all) need people to whom we can vent, good ears to listen to us when we're frustrated, smart, savvy people who can offer good advice.

I forget to thank her too often. I'm not kidding -- she's one of the driving forces and one of the ORIGINAL people who "got it" and contributed to this issue. Heck, I knew her even before I knew DU, and that's a long time now.
