Stabbing and shooting in Madison today
I hope the kids there didn't see this. :scared:

Police Kill Knife-Wielding Man At Madison Day-Care Center
No Children Injured

MADISON, Wis. -- Police are still at the scene of an officer-involved shooting at the Red Caboose Day Care on Williamson Street, near downtown Madison.

Police said a man with a knife walked into the daycare center, and held a worker against her will around 9 a.m. When police arrived, they confronted the man and ended up shooting and killing him. The worker has been taken to the hospital with stab wounds.

1. Whoa, too sad!
I agree with you. I hope the kids had been taken out of the area by the time the police got there. That is something no one should ever have to see.

2. It was about 4 blocks from my house
I'm not sure if the kids were still in the room for long after the cops arrived or not. The guy apparently had told them to get under their desks. A number of my co-workers had to leave work today to go pick up their kids from there, however. The kids were certainly shook up.

From what I've heard locally, it kind of sounded like a 'suicide by cop'. Apparently the guy refused to drop the knife, and supposedly said, "you're going to have to shoot me".

I hadn't heard that the worker (who was somehow related to him -- maybe girlfriend) had been stabbed until this account, so I'm not sure about the rest of my details at this point.

3. One update after the local news
Well, the person who was stabbed was not a woman, but a male daycare worker who held off the maniac until the teachers could get the kids into 'lockdown'. So apparently the kids were out of the room at the time.

The person who was stabbed is apparently going to be fine.

The news didn't mention anything about the guy who was shot knowing anybody in the daycare center, so that part may not be true. All of what I'd heard earlier came from people at work.

4. I have to say every time I hear it this "suicide by cop" thing

bothers me. I know, I don't have all the details so I have to speak in generalizations. But in a situation like this where the guy had a knife, not a gun, why not tazer him instead of kill him?
