B. Barr: These gay marriage amendments have the smell of unwarranted panic
The world has become a surreal place when Bob Barr, the former Georgia congressman, can offer himself up as a voice of restraint and tolerance.

But there he was, slicing up a smothered steak off the Marietta Square and arguing against an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would ban gay marriages, against an amendment to the Georgia Constitution for the same purpose. And against a climate of fear that Barr says has driven the nation since Sept. 11, 2001.

"Does it bother me that we have some states that recognize homosexual marriages? No. That's our federal system of government. If you don't like the policies of one state, you can move. That's freedom," said Barr, the author of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act.

This is the still same Barr who gave liberals fits during his four terms in Washington, the same Barr who led the impeachment of President Bill Clinton. But where U.S. Sen. Zell Miller (D-Ga.) has embraced the establishment conservatism of Bush Republicans, Barr has headed off in his own direction. Some would call it libertarian. Barr would probably define himself as a purist.

4. He's a strict constructionist!
In other words, you don't mess with the Constitution.

He also fought against the Patriot Act. He & his group joined with the ACLU in their fight, against unconstitutional search & seizures.

I cannot stand Bob Barr, but sometimes he's right.

8. bbb but
Clinton's sex life did not result in an impeachable offense and that showed the lack of his ability/desire to interpret the constitution correctly.

Did you notice how much more constructionist he became after leaving the House of Reps?

:hi: Leilani

P.S. Seriously who has time to read all these articles. ;)

3. Maybe because he himself is a black man...
he's more open to other people's civil rights.

9. But he adamantly denies being black!
It was an issue in one of his campaigns - even though it shouldn't have been. Georgia, my home state, has had its share of weird congresspersons. (I never lived in Bob Barr's district. The congressman for my county of residence, Nathan Deal, is a stinkin' turncoat former Democrat.)

Leadership Council.

11. Could he be thwarting and outing.
A lover may have put his foot down. So, he'd make a statement, then disappear for the rest of the race. Just guessing.

12. I wonder how many republicans of the non-lunatic type are
thinking the same thing. Unfortunately, unless Bush rips off his shirt and reveals that he is a closet Liberal, they will continue to vote for him. Have you ever heard these people give a laundry list of everything that Bush has done that pisses them off and then they end by saying they will vote for him??? Sickening.
