Anyone watching C-Span 2: Sorrows of Empire: Chalmers Johnson!
Edited on Sun Mar-07-04 10:25 AM by KoKo01
Unbelievable. He's tearing into Bush! And it's an excellent discussion of American Hegemony in the world.

C-Span Booknotes. Look for a repeat because it's amazing and verifies much of what we talk about with Shrub and his Wars. And our Socialist DU'ers will really enjoy him..Actually DU Socialist already know him ;-)'s

4. This is definitely a book to buy. It's unbelievable, I wish I could do a
running thread. Best spokesman for "us" I've heard on C-Span since Kevin Phillips. Believe me on this! I will try to find it somewhere, but I can't do it now.

BTW: for Us Anti-Iraq Invasion folks the world over he says this is the start of a definte "World Movement." That made me feel great! Actually he has perked me up that someone else knows. I'll try to get his bio, but hopefully other DU'ers who know him will jump in with more info.

He wrote: "Blowback" which I've heard mentioned here on DU.

12. D'OH!
I feel really intelligent now. I've read "Blowback" and I didn't even remember the author's name. The book just moved up my list two postions--one step for your review and another for his previous work.

"Blowback" IS a great book.

5. Yes he mentions her and he says Americans need to know about the
about the Military-Industrial Complex. He says Eisenhower really meant
Military-Congressional Industrial Complex from his papers but was warned from saying that.

I have heard him before and he is Brilliant! I am going to get his book right away.

<snip>
About the book:
In the years after the Soviet Union imploded, the United States was described first as the globe’s "lone superpower," then as a "reluctant sheriff," next as the "indispensable nation," and now, in the wake of 9/11, as a "New Rome." Here, Chalmers Johnson thoroughly explores the new militarism that is transforming America and compelling its people to pick up the burden of empire.

Reminding us of the classic warnings against militarism--from George Washington’s farewell address to Dwight Eisenhower’s denunciation of the military-industrial complex--Johnson uncovers its roots deep in our past. Turning to the present, he maps America’s expanding empire of military bases and the vast web of services that supports them. He offers a vivid look at the new caste of professional warriors who have infiltrated multiple branches of government, who classify as "secret" everything they do, and for whom the manipulation of the military budget is of vital interest.

Among Johnson’s provocative conclusions is that American militarism is putting an end to the age of globalization and bankrupting the United States, even as it creates the conditions for a new century of virulent blowback. The Sorrows of Empire suggests that the former American republic has already crossed its Rubicon--with the Pentagon leading the way.

"Chalmers Johnson's relentless logic, authoritative scholarship, and elegantly biting prose distinguish The Sorrows of Empire, like all his other work. Anyone who reads it will have a much sharper sense of the costs of America's new world-girdling commitments--and I hope it is widely read." --James Fallows, Author of Breaking the News...Read reviews

Chalmers Johnson, president of the Japan Policy Research Institute and professor emeritus at the University of California, San Diego, is a frequent contributor to the Los Angeles Times and The Nation. His previous books include MITI and the Japanese Miracle. He lives in Southern California.

debate a person from the other side. It's fair, I don't want to be bias, I want to hear what the Whores have to say in their defense.

I bet you 80% of Congress don't know the first thing about the constitution. I wish Leno/Letterman could do a piece on asking Congress about the Constitution/our history and see how they do. Just like Leno/Letterman do to the people on the street.

'What is the "declaration of independence"?'

Person on the street: 'Isn't that a super size meal at McDonlds?'

The Sorrows of Empire: Militarism, Secrecy, and the End of the Republic
Chalmers Johnson

Description: From the Los Angeles Public Library, Chalmers Johnson discusses "The Sorrows of Empire," in which he condemns US foreign policy. Johnson likens the United States to a modern-day Roman Empire, a nation thriving on fear and military domination. He argues that the ultimate purpose of US military bases is not to maintain stability or promote democracy, but to defend US hegemony. He traces US world domination from the Cold War to today, then claims American militarism is irreversibly damaging its Constitution and the trust of its people.

Author Bio: Chalmers Johnson is president of the Japan Policy Research Institute and a professor emeritus at the University of California in San Diego. He is the author of fifteen books, including "Peasant Nationalism and Communist Power" and "Blowback: The Costs and Consequences of American Empire," which won the 2001 American Book Award of the Before Columbus Foundation. He has also written numerous articles and contributes frequently to the "Los Angeles Times" and the "Nation."

Publisher: Metropolitan Books 115 West 18th Street New York, NY 10011
