Poll question: Would you be interested in this?
I am thinking about writing and then posting something, but only if DUers would be interested. If I work on it all weekend and it dies a quick death, I'll be highly frustrated and depressed, and in my current state of mind, I don't need to go there.

Here's the background: My mother is a hardcore RW freeper-type nut; she is also a conservative Christian. I, as a hardcore LW very, very liberal Christian, have had a moderate amount of success in talking to her on the gay marriage/GLBT people are human, too range of issues. She has gone from believing that gays should be formally barred from any occupation where they might have access to children to a simple "just don't make me watch two men kissing and I'll live" attitude, and is in favor of civil unions.

If I were to post a series of talking points to assist liberals (especially those of you who have religious family or friends but no deep understanding of their perspective or knowledge of Scripture) in talking to their religious family and friends about the gay marriage, which of the following statements would apply to you:

5. Yes.
I'm going to go ahead and do it. I'll post it Sunday night, most likely.

I was pleased with how honestly people answered the poll. It helps that I put answers reflecting my observation of how DUers really feel.

PM me if you like, or just keep an eye out in GD on Sunday.

6. Please do
as a gay man with a very Mormon family I have seen them start to open their eyes however sometimes I don't know how to help them see that their political views do not have to be their religous views. I sometimes feel like its really hard to help them see that they are voting for people that harm my partner and I every day.

7. The thing that helped the most
was when she started insisting that marriage was a sacrament before God, not a purely secular thing, I pointed out that it's both. She argued. I trumped her with a family I babysit for -- the parents are both atheists. I said, "in the eyes of the state of Alabama, are you and dad MORE married than they are? In case of a death, a divorce, spousal privilege in court, health insurance, or anything else, would the state treat your Christian marriage different from their atheist marriage?"

It was so cool -- her eyes got big as baseballs for a few seconds. She said, "I hadn't considered that."

That opened the door to explain about the dual nature of marriage, and went on from there.

There's a lot more to it, including a few Scriptures. I'm sorry I don't know much about the book of Mormon. :-(

I'm outlining now. Will write tomorrow.

Best of luck to you and your partner.
