Why, oh why, do I try to inform my relatives?
Edited on Fri Mar-05-04 06:29 PM by Ripley
I thought I had done a good job with my retired, republican, southern Dad, who for the last year told me he had nothing in common with the Republican party and he hated just about everything Bush did and he would not vote for him again...he even applauded Pitt! But when push came to shove in our latest conversation he said he would'nt vote for Kerry because he voted for the war and was hypocritcal now. And he actually told me that Walmart was good for the country. Maybe he is on too many drugs.

ACK!

1. He's against the invasion? That is a great start!!
Maybe he could write in Howard Dean. At least he won't give Smirk a vote.

That's good, and actually, because Kerry voted for the invasion, I am having to hold my nose and drag myself to the polls to vote for him, so I can relate.

5. Ahhhhh....Dean.
I told him about my Dean Meet-ups last fall and his answer was...
Pffffffffffffffffft. He hates doctors, period.

But I made him look at Dean's position papers and he said "I like that guy despite his MD."

2. I understand your frustration with the Wal-Mart opinion ...
I cannot imagine going near one of those stores, but my relatives shop there and love to extol its virtues. (So cheap, so convenient, everything under one roof.) As Devo sang, "Freedom from choice is what we want" and I'm afraid that one of these days I'll wake up and find there's only one store: WAL-MART! They're the perfect stores for people with Lowest Common Denominator taste.

3. Good description...LCD>>>
But senior citizens like my parents LIKE those cheapo prices.

I'm sick, because he used to see the upsurge of Walmart as a decline for American workers and middle class. Now he seems to no longer care...

4. I'm with you, my friend
I have Repub parents, and a bother in law who works for Wal-Mart (manager). A technique I have found helpful in discussing Wal-Mart with the aged is to get them talking about the good ole days when it was just the five n dime and a soda jerk in town, and everyone knew everyone blah blah blah....

And how Wal-Mart destroys all of that. And how Wal-Mart's ability to save you a nickel comes from the fact that they employ Chinese slaves. A lot of people flat-out don't think about it. Remember, for most folks life is just about going to work, saving money where they can, and what's on TV tonight...focus on the last one. They have literally never thought about the bigger picture.

6. Yes, the big picture.
Welcome to DU Inhale. :hi:

My father has this nasty habit of pulling my leg. He knows Walmartization is bad! Maybe he is just messing with my head!

7. Convince him...
to vote libertarian...They're in favor of unfettered business monopolies and they also opposed the war.

If you can't convince someone to vote D, always try third party or write in.
