Re: * claiming to the "War President" . . .
1. * can't necessarily be the "War President" if he endorsed the banner on the U.S. Abraham Lincoln proclaiming: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED"

2. What if this year were 2008? And the "war" was still ongoing? Would this mean that * couldn't leave office? His rationale for THIS year is that you don't change "leaders" during a "crisis". If you could elect non-incumbents in 2008 without a problem, why would this year be any different?

3. I know, I know, the "War on Terra" is perpetual, a la 1984, which is more symbolic than real (until our next set-up/attack). So does that mean * is Fuhrer for Life or can our constitutional system of government prevail and continue despite the "challenge"?

1. There is no war.
There is an occupation. There is no risk in changing leaders right now, it would not destabilize anything or put any major military actions at risk. There is no war on terror, terrorism has existed long before even our country has and will exist long after Bush has passed away. We cannott continue to let him get away with framing terrrorism as a war. It would be like a president waging a war on homocide and claiming he couldnt be voted out of office until people stop killing each other.

Bush cannot subvert democracy simply by engaging in sustained military activity.

4. Since he has been the cause of the crisis' we now face
the best thing we could do is change leaders and get an inclusive foreign policy in place instead of this "go it alone" bullshit that alienates us and makes us hated throughout the rest of the world. Eff bu$h and his war boner.

5. I think it is a revealing choice of words

* often inadvertently reveals truths in his misspeaking.

Most presidents in war-time have been spoken of as "war-time presidents" rather than "war presidents".

7. War President....great now lets roll the ads...
showing the war president reading his children's book while American burned. Show the war president hiding and showing up 3 days later to address the nation. Show the war president's ties to BinLaden and their escape from the US. Show the war president in front of 550 coffins draped in the USA flag.

10. wasn't "dictator" the Roman term for "wartime leader"?
Edited on Fri Mar-05-04 05:26 PM by Lisa
I seem to recall that the old Republic allowed for a single leader to serve in times of crisis -- but he had to step down as soon as, ahem, the mission was accomplished.

Iroquois friends tell me that in their traditional society, war leaders were considered too dangerous to rule in peacetime, and were deposed (usually by a council of female elders) when the fighting was over. Note that the US Constitution apparently took some tips from Iroquois Confederacy law -- though not that one.
