shot down a GOPer argument yesterday
discussion of sorts with a bush* supporter about the economy... he blamed Clinton for the present state of economy

I mentioned the job growth, economy growth, surplus, balanced budget etc. that we had under Clinton and how this all went to hell in a handbasket under bush*

his argument was that job/economy growth, surplus, balanced budget had nothing to do with Clinton, but rather the republican congress

I nodded then smacked him between the rhetoric --- "ok, let's assume, for a moment, that a president has little to do with the economy. And assuming your assessment is correct, that Clinton didn't spur economic growth, create a surplus or balance the budget, and that this is a result of a republican congress...

well, then -- we still have a republican congress and we also have a republican president -- so if these guys are soooooo good at fiscal responsibility then why is the economy in the toilet? furthermore, if Clinton had nothing to do with economic growth, then how can you blame Clinton for the crappy economy? Seems to me that the blame belongs on the credit-card republicans...."

he sputtered - "but the taxcuts are helping..."

me: "what taxcuts? our state and local taxes just went up by more than what we benefited from bush*'s wealth-fare give-away...and you were crabbing about that just last week - after saying last year that if local/state taxes go up then at least the money would stay local -- and two more local companies announced layoffs of 50 or more people this week. The only thing I can see the taxcuts helping is helping companies shut down and move jobs overseas. If this keeps up, we all will be looking to move to India or Mexico just to find a job..."

no response, he suddenly remembered something he had to do

3. my partner works at a small law firm
although 3 out of the 4 law-partners are registered republicans, none of them "like" bush*

I have a bumper sticker (see below), my partner has one on her truck too... one of the republican law-partners asked where she got it, he wants a couple for his vehicles...

to clarify things - this lawfirm does elder law, criminal law and has contracts with large insurance agencies etc. -- they do not (as the norm) take on personal injury or the similar cases on behalf of an individual - so their dislike of bush* is not because 'tort' reform would cut into their income

they all basically think bush* is just plain bad for everyone...

5. I always said I'd never clutter up my vehicle with ugly ole
bumper stickers. Guess what?

I have them PLASTERED all over the back of my van. It's my best way to get a message out to the public without having to go door to door.
Woohoo Rad

6. excellent, well done! alas,
when beaten by logic, republicans run to their cave, angry at having been beaten.

logic only rarely actually convinces a republican of anything. normally, as in this case, it sounds like he just got upset that he couldn't win, but he still thinks he's somehow right.

12. Also
If I'm not mistaken the republicans in congress voted against the Clinton Budget that got things going. Al Gore cast the vote that broke the tie that led directly to getting the countries fiscal stuff back on track. If the republicans had anything to do with it at all it was that they did everything in their power to keep Clinton from cleaning up the Bush/Reagan mess.
