Lib Radio in New York - Randi Rhodes - Al Franken!

Appropriately the new station is WLIB :)

WLIB (1190 AM) currently mixes Caribbean music with black-targeted talk shows after budget cuts forced it to drop its all-talk format three years ago.

Air America and its parent, Progress Media, just moved onto a floor shared by WLIB and sister station WBLS at 3 Park Ave.

WLIB, owned in part by former Manhattan Borough President Percy Sutton and run by his son, Pierre, broadcasts a strong signal over New York City, Westchester and a nice chunk of eastern New Jersey.

It is not known whether WLIB will be purchased outright or leased.

3. Things Are Shaping Up...

WLIB is a great signal for the New York area...and the east coast at night. It's just been upgraded.

The LIB goes back to WWII...it stood for the "Voice Of Liberty"...and for decades served as one of the first radio stations in the nation to serve the African-American community in New York...and one of the first Black talk stations. That is a great addition.

Also, I've heard the Southern California affiliate will be on 830AM...located in Orange County (of all places)...with a daytime signal that reaches from Santa Barbara to Tijuana. Currently it features Right Wing flamers...that'll be nice to silence with some truth and information.

The Chicago affiliate is 950AM...located in the city with a limited reach to the suburbs. Listeners should have little trouble hearing the station during the day but could be very dicey overnight, as the station's signal moves to a site near Hammond and directs it signal up the lake at night. If you vacation in Mackinaw, you'll hear it just fine.

"Reliable Sources" tell me several more stations are about to hop on and the logitistics are well underway to make this thing happen in the next weeks.

To those who really want to support this venture...if you own a business in these areas or ones that will have affiliates, I'd strongly suggest taking out a "commercial flight" with these stations. Even if you haven't done radio or any type of advertising before, the show of economic support to the station will help it get off the ground (there are a lot of bills to pay in a start-up) and is used to line up even larger, more sustaining advertisers. Ratings will be poor for these stations, so we must make it happen through the grassroots...and then show it's economic strength that will get the notice of an Infinity or Disney or other large broadcast company (not Clear Channel or Cumulus) who are now catering right with their talk stations since they see more money in that than in the left.
