Karen Hughes, counselor to the president, was born in Paris, France 43 years ago. Her father was a major general in the US Army. She attended Southern Methodist University and received a BA with honors in English and Journalism in 1977. She is now married to attorney Jerry Hughes with two children. Karen took Robert, her 13 year old son, out of school for a bit so he could share the experience of a presidential campaign with her.
Possibly her best attribute is her loyalty to President George W. Bush. Bending her and her family's life around his political career has earned her and her family and interesting ride, to say the least. ?We knew each other when our definition of a motorcade was one car,? Bush said. ?We?ve been through a lot of good times, and some difficult ones, and I can honestly say that I respect and admire both of them more today than on the day I went to work for them six and half years ago,? Hughes said referring to Laura and George.
Though Karen started her career as a television reporter for KXAS-TV, she started her political career in 1984 as Texas press coordinator for Ronald Reagan's presidential campaign. She was the executive director of the state of Texas Republican Party from 1991-1993. She was the director of communications for George W Bush's campaigns for governor of Texas in 94 and 98. She was also Bush's spokesperson and press secretary while he was governor. Hughes was director of communications for Bush's presidential campaign and is now his counselor. Her responsibilites include giving the president strategic advice in all matters relating to communications and policy
