Why is Aristide still alive?
If we kidnapped him, why did we let him live to tell the tale? If this whole episode was engineered by the US it would have been much easier and cleaner to have him knocked off by a "sleeper cell".

6. As another DUer remarked, Bush is no longer in control of the situation
Around the world, he's burned too many bridges, and either doesn't know or doesn't care. We're witnessing blowback in many places at once.

2. Either he was supposed to keep his mouth shut,
in which case, keep an eye on the health of his family members, or they are just so arrogant that they don't care anymore. Which would be their downfall.

"They" being the BFEE/PNAC, just to be clear.

3. I think they were afraid to kill him...
had they taken him in secret, they would have done so, but the news was slowly coming out.

Killing him would demolish any doubts about any intended malice in the matter. Now they can say they were trying to protect him or some such.

4. unnecessary overcautiousness, not unlike the cover ban at Dover

where they bring US "casualties."

8. Don't Think It's Bush
I just can't think of a reason why Bush would want Aristide out, I mean, it isn't like there is oil in Haiti. I mean, if Bush wanted to encourage a coup, why wouldn't he do that in Cuba?

9. I wondered the same thing. I know they have his family so??
Perhaps they hoped to intimidate in that manner?

10. What do you think would happen in Haiti...
Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 07:39 PM by Dirk39
Or maybe he doesn't want middle-class Europeans to become "terrorists"?

This would have sent a kind of "dead or alive" signal to all victims of the IMF and US neocolonialism in the world and a lot of them would rather fight than to starve in U.S. and European made slums.

Hello from Germany,
Dirk

11. It would have too obvious
These people think they are so smart they can double think everyone. Who will believe Aristide over Bush* and Powell and Rumsfeld? If they had him killed they would create even more suspicion.

12. Is it possible
that they didn't want to make him a martyr?

Dunno why I think so, but it seems like leaving him alive but powerless would be a "better" choice.
