To me the paramount question is Why Now?

And why such an open use of force now? There would appear to be no pressing need and not much to gain.

So I think it was this - a shot across the American Political, media and opinion elites' bow. As Bush unravels, and the media drift off message, what better way to tell the Democrats and the media to shut up and get back in line than a coup just off our doorstep?
