So the lady asked me to sign her petition...and I said...
I don't sign it without reading it..and the light was bad..and my eyes are bad... anyway. she says .."It's only a petition to "make the xxxx power company not waste our money, and to make them tell us what they spent it on"...

Apparently my city "contracted" with an outside company (Enron, Reliant, Duke come to mind)to take over the generation and distribution, and NOW ...AFTER they signed the contract, they are "trying" to make sure the company "does it right"..

I reminded the nice lady that perhaps it would have been a better idea to get that stuff in writing...BEFORE our city leaders went along with this hairbrained scheme.. :eyes:

The main thrust oif this plan is so that the builders could build even MORE houses here :grr:. Our schools are already overcrowded, oour roads congested with traffic...

1. Thanks, SoCal. I think this is going on "under the radar" all over the US

It's all quieted down with the "lull" in Enron...(the three year lull), but there were stories of these private engergy companies springing up in SC and I posted an article here on it way back on "DU-1." They were called "Merchant Energy Companies" (I think it was Merchant) I could be wrong about the name. Anyway there wasn't much interest and I sort of put it aside because with the Bush Admn there's always some new scheme to get upset about. So, many we lose the ability to stay on one topic and work it through to an end.

Thanks for the alert, I hope some DU'ers will be watchful when they hear about "privitization" in their own areas. Remember when "Salin" did all the work about privitization of Water Rights? And I think "Kentuck" or another poster talked about how their area had just beaten back one of these companies trying to take over their local cities "water rights?"

So much stuff..it boggles the mind. I actually think my mental capacity has been reduced trying to keep up with all of it and it seems to never go anywhere in getting a dialog going or resolution.

BTW: Miss Ming (or whatever the Chinese Kitty you had posted was named) was a treat. Always look for your funny graphics....DeLay the cockroach! That's perfect for him! :D

2. I get so sick and tired
of being asked and or harassed to sign these petitions. I have been fooled a couple of times so anymore I won't sign any of them.

3. Piperray, I think SoCal was approached by a "Person" with petition
in hand, unlike those of us who've signed so many "Impeach Bush!" "Call for Senate Investigation of X,Y,Z, etc" ONLINE.

I don't sign anymore "online petitions," myself because they just clutter up my E-Mail Box and never go anywhere, but SoCal's (at least my read of her post) was a real "person-to-person" petition and it was about these "Energy Merchants" (the NEW Enrons).

But, as I said, I understand where you're coming from if your post was about those "Online" expressions of "discontent." :-(

4. Yes , it was a person and some of my friends just signed
without even glancing at what they were signing

That's how these wacko propositions get on the ballots out here..

My favorites are the ones who say they are from "The people for.....(usually something like.. clean water, healthy children, good schools, reduced traffic)...all things that NO ONE would be AGAINST... and that's how they get the required number of signatures..

They catch people coming out of a grocery store with whining kids in tow, and melting ice cream..and in stead of just saying NO.. most actually sign the damn things and think they have just done their civic duty..BAH !! :(

5. Thanks
I used to believe that I should sign all petitions. Bring the vote to the populace and all that. No more. I just don't sign the petitions unless I truly support them. I actually read every word before signing. I think we have to now.
