7. Pacifica radio is reporting live from Haiti right now.
Their reporters are broadcasting live as at least 2 people have been murdered by death squads.... the Mayors of two cities are under siege... you can hear US helicopters overhead as well... and Aristede appears to have been kidnapped. Please, just tune in and listen.

:(

9. Who kidnapped Aristide?
The US? The "rebels"? Allies of the Supreme Court Justice who seized power? Is the SC Justice an ally of the "rebels"?

Were the US helicopters involved in the bombing of the television station where Aristide said he wasn't going to step down?

16. Reporting That Aristide Was Taken By Force By U.S. Troops !!!
Aristide's caretaker, an "old man cowering in a corner", said that a U.S. helicopter brought troops to Aristide's residence and took him. Caretaker said the Aristide was upset, and did not want to go. U.S. is claiming Aristide 'resigned', many at Pacifica are wondering if he wasn't kidnapped.

No true confirmation of resignation.

27. That's The Problem Here, Ain't It ???
Pacifica has some reporters on the ground, but apparently we bombed the television station (if the reports are accurate), and the U.S. forces are not letting journalists there do their jobs. So so far, we are having to take the reporting we can get at face value.

It ain't easy, but with this crop of insane criminals in the White House, I tend to believe what I've heard so far.

:shrug:

BTW - Will start searching for any corroborating articles.

50. Haiti a drug waystation -- says Chicago Tribune
Edited on Sun Feb-29-04 04:50 PM by Zan_of_Texas
Is this a turf war for drug lords?

This makes way too much sense. You have a country that is scarce on resources. The first independent country of former-slaves. A tough embargo like the one against Iraq, making a bad situation worse. The infrastructure is very weak -- access to clean water is not at all universal. Many of the island nation's trees have been cut down. There is a high illiteracy rate.

So, just like American inner cities, with higher populations of people of color, are used as drug trafficking centers, Haiti has become a drug trafficking center, says the Chicago Tribune.

Drug money reportedly funding Haiti fighting
U.S. says island nation a key stop on cocaine highway

By Gary Marx and Cam Simpson, Tribune staff reporters. Gary Marx reported from Port-au-Prince and Cam Simpson from Washington

February 29, 2004
Chicago Tribune
put http:// at the front of this long link: www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-0402290254feb29,1,1003444.story

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- <snip>But experts and diplomats say several of the top rebel leaders are former military and police officials who are suspected of major human-rights violations while in power and who allegedly have financed their insurgency with past profits from the illegal drug trade.

<snip>The two top rebel leaders have been suspected of involvement in the drug trade. Authorities in Haiti and elsewhere believe top commander Guy Philippe became involved in narcotics smuggling in the 1990s while he was a leading Haitian police official. Philippe denied in an interview with the Tribune that he ever participated in the drug trade. <snip> For two decades, Colombian drug lords have used money and power to turn the island nation into a virtual base of operations, using its isolated beaches and even highways as landing strips to off-load cocaine later shipped to U.S. shores.

<snip>

Besides Philippe and Chamblain, several other rebel leaders are former Haitian military and police officials who held key positions a decade ago when cocaine trafficking flourished on the island, experts say.

<snip>
The DEA said Haiti's attractiveness to South American drug lords rests in its strategic location, its uncontrolled borders and lengthy coastlines, along with a "lack of law-enforcement resources." Haiti has no army and its police force has about 3,500 members.

<snip>

Aristide's jet refueled on the island of Antigua and was en route to South Africa, government and airport officials in that Caribbean country said. But officials in Johannesburg said there had been no recent contact with Aristide nor an offer of asylum.

Another U.S. official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said South Africa was the country most often mentioned. Secretary of State Colin Powell conferred on Saturday with South African President Thabo Mbeki.

National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice said Aristide was going to a "third" country, meaning he would not take refuge in the United States as he did the last time he was ousted, in 1991.

47. "It's Clinton's fault"...assholes!
Edited on Sun Feb-29-04 05:13 PM by Zinfandel
What a load of propaganda bullshit the AP story is...making the racist Bush sound as if he cares about the Haitian people, who are black and are just more slaves in his corporate eyes...BushCo is behind this whole uprising.

I recall about six years or so, the Pigman Limbaugh and the Republicans, every day would criticize Clinton's support for elected Haitian President, Aristide, saying it wouldn't work and the Haitian people are used to and need to be under a more dedicatory rule, (yeah, right) etc. etc....President Clinton stood his ground and supported free elections and Democracy in Haiti...which pissed off the Republicans imperialist and corporations (who've always had their way in Haiti and all third world countries for that matter) as they predicted doom for Clinton's policy and the Democratically elected Aristide government...

Things in Haiti were running somewhat more smoothly, than before. At least the people were in control of their own country and it's economy.

Until the Bush Republican fascist now in power in US took over...along with the corporations mafia hit men, the CIA...who created this "rebel" uprising and unrest to overthrow the democratic elected government in Haiti...as the CIA will have another (as has been the CIA purpose and agenda for the past sixty year) install a ring-wing puppet, an American controlled dictator (who is paid off well) and who will allow American corporations to steal the countries resources and use it's people pretty much as slave labor. When the WTO & INF can come in and completely decimate the country and it's very fragile economy, putting it so far in debt, while at the same time removing any hope of self rule of their own country.

That's how our corporations work...with our tax dollars supporting the CIA, who in turn creates death squads and undermines legitimate democratic governments, with unrest and payoffs.

All for corporate exploitation and military dominince of a land and it's people...the world knows this...BushCo just says, we don't care and fuck off to the rest of the world!

by one caller that discussed Haiti's attractiveness for the drug trade? Didn't see it here: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/

If that's a big reason behind this "coup" and Bushco is supporting it (along with our CIA funded rebels), then what does that say about the U.S. involvement in drugs?

53. Aristide committed no crime. He shouldn't have to lost his office.

Bush watched him fall and did nothing but pressure him to leave when he was under assault. Why didn't we send forces to support his elected presidency?

Why did we refuse to defend democracy there? Especially one that our country had expended money and military to effect in the first place.

Who does Bush support to replace him there? His deputy? Will he defend the new government or will he let it fall to the rebel terrorists?

This was one more reversal of the Clinton legacy as Bush, through his negligence and indifference, let the work of the nation and the international community fall by the wayside and fester into a crisis and an emergency that he could exploit to the will of some hack in his mindless cabal.

This is another overthrow of a soverign nation under the Bush doctrine of world dominance. The former Aristide government shouldn't be forced by this Bush league to share power with terrorist rebels.
