Daily U.S. Casualties 2/29/2004

As of Friday, 547 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq, according to the Department of Defense. Of those, 378 died as a result of hostile action and 169 died of nonhostile causes, the department said. The department did not provide an update Saturday.

The British military has reported 58 deaths; Italy, 17; Spain, eight; Bulgaria, five; Thailand, two; Denmark, Ukraine and Poland have reported one each.

Since May 1, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 409 U.S. soldiers have died -- 263 as a result of hostile action and 146 of nonhostile causes, according to the military.

Since the start of military operations, 2,709 U.S. service members have been injured as a result of hostile action, according to the Defense Department's figures as of Friday. Nonhostile injured numbered 417.

There were no new

deaths reported by the military.

The latest identifications of the dead reported by the Department of Defense:


Army Chief Warrant Officer Stephen M. Wells, 29, Egremont, Mass.


Army Chief Warrant Officer Matthew C. Laskowski, 32, Phoenix.

They died Wednesday when their helicopter crashed in Habbinayah, Iraq. Both were assigned to the 4th Squadron, Outlaw Troop, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colo.
