No time to vote – I'm having sex!
A WOMAN claimed she was having group sex with 30 men in Nimbin, NSW, and could not get to a polling booth in Queensland on time to vote.

That is the all-time best excuse, according to electoral commissioner Bob Longland.

Hundreds of people have already contacted the Electoral Commission of Queensland offering reasons for their no-show as 2.2 million others voted in the February 7 state poll.

"You could have walked across Moreton Bay for all the broken-down fishing boats," Mr Longland said.

5. NO!
That is absolutely the WRONG way to go. A democracy simply CANNOT FORCE its citizens to vote, anymore than you have the right to keep them from voting in the first place.

Besides, think of all of the wingnuts and misinformed, uninformed, and simply brain-dead people who don't normally vote, do you REALLY want them to be forced to vote?

4. Forced voting is stupid
it conceivably conveys a sense of false mandate, and denies a person the right of protest.

In a hypothetical country what if the only candidates running for office are war hawks and I am a pacifist? Why the hell would I vote for them, or alternatively cast a vote for which I feel am an not educated enough on?

7. If I were the commissioner, I'd give her a pass on the fine...

...if for nothing else, originality. And I'd deliver it in person.
