Shi ites Unbound (Newsweek)
Edited on Sat Feb-28-04 07:49 PM by Mari333

Sistani wanted elections last year, but compromised. He wanted them before June 30, but he compromised again. Whether he will endorse Bremer's claim (said to be based on U.N. assessments) that elections may have to wait another year to 15 months is an open question. But what little Sistani has said in public suggests that his vision of democracy and sovereignty may be fundamentally different from Washington's. In an interview last week with the German magazine Der Spiegel, the ayatollah sounded fed up. "It must not take long," he said of the elections. Any more stalling would risk an uprising, he hinted. "The people know how they must act." Having at last tasted freedom on their own terms, Iraq's Shiites are unlikely to settle for anything less.

1. I saw another quote attributed to Sistani.
He said that he expected the Americans to leave after June 30.

2. The Chimp will leave when he's good and ready
in other words - never. Sistani is in great danger of looking like a punk if he keeps hoping for things that don't come to pass.

4. Who will blink first?
Sistani may be able to hold out until November and get to deal with a new Democratic administration. I don't believe they will have much luck with them either. Hello increased attacks on Americans.
