BBV: Phone or Email your Senators.
Edited on Sat Feb-28-04 05:21 PM by Eric J in MN
Phone and email your Senators to co-sponsor "The Voter Confidence Act," S.1980.

You can find their names, numbers, and official websites (which include email forms) using the dropdown for your state at:
http://www.senate.gov
--------------
suggested Phone words:
Hello, my name is ____ and I'm calling from the city of _____. Can I speak with someone about a voting-rights bill?

I'd like to leave a message for the Senator to please co-sponsor "The Voter Confidence Act," S.1980, to increase the accuracy of our elections.
-------------
suggested Email words:
We need voting systems which are accurate. "The Voter Confidence Act," S.1980 will advance this by requiring voter-verifiable paper-ballots to be printed by electronic voting machines.

Please co-sponsor "The Voter Confidence Act," S.1980.

For more information on this issue, visit:
www.verifiedvoting.org

-----------

Note: if you contacted your Senators before, please do it again.

1. Thanks for the reminder
I left a message with an aide (Graham Shalgian) to Sen Kennedy this week, letting him know of Schumer's and Nelson's co-sponsorship this week, and he never called back. So I will pay him a (second) visit next week. My bonus is there's a nice restaurant across the street... Shoot, maybe I can buy Graham dinner. And if the Senator's in town, he can come too. What a hoot!

6. definitions
black box voting- voting on electronic machines which DON'T produce paper ballots the voter can check. Just trusting a private voting-machine company to say who won the election.

DRE- Direct Recording Electronic machines. Touchscreen voting machines and other electronic voting machines. Includes electronic machines which produce paper ballots and those which don't. The latter are black box voting machines.

vvpt- voter verified paper trail. Letting the voter check a printout after voting to make sure the vote was recorded accurately and that meaningful recounts would be possible.

I wrote to Bob Graham and Bill Nelson, thanks for the reminder. And thanks to DU for getting me off my butt - I'm no longer an armchair liberal, lazing around and hoping for the best!

While Bob Graham is the sponsor and Bill Nelson is a co-sponsor, it's good that they hear their constituents continue to be concerned about this issue.

The only other Senate co-sponsor is Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY).

Cool. I should have made clear in my original post that Bob Graham (D-FL) sponsored "The Voter Confidence Act" in the Senate and the only 2 Senate co-sponsors so far are Bill Nelson (D-FL) and Charles Schumer (D-NY).

If you want to look at a list of co-sponsors in House and Senate, you can visit
www.verifiedvoting.org

and on the left-side of the screen, select
"The Voter Confidence Acts" and then click
"H.R.2239 Co-Sponsor List" or "S.1980 Co-Sponsor List."

Maybe your Congressperson isn't a co-sponsor.

I just can't figure out why we always have to keep badgering them to do the right thing. Do they not understand this issue or is there another reason the Democrats haven't been all over it?

20. Let's keep the calls and emails going.
If you've contacted your Senators before, and they still aren't co-sponsors of The Voter Confidence Act, keep asking them to co-sponsor it.

So far, the only Senators who are co-sponsors are the two in Florida plus Charles Schumer of NY.
