Asa lost his re-election bid. I think that he's a Homeland Security appointee now, IIRC.

15. Ooops, that was brother Tim - link
http://www.americanpolitics.com/20000821Love.html

Meanwhile, Tim Hutchinson, GOP Senator from Arkansas -- who, by the way, is also a Baptist minister -- is making it legal with his own former staffer, Randi Fredholm. The news of their longtime affair hit last year, just a few weeks before news of the Reverend Tim's divorce hit the papers. Now, don't Baptist ministers like the Reverend normally oppose divorce, much less adultery? And conservative Christians like him are usually the first to tsk-tsk over America's divorce rates. Here's what Max Brantley of the Arkansas Times has to say about the Reverend Tim's marrying the woman for whom he left his wife:

Sen. Tim Hutchinson. Divorced a year -- as if that sanitizes things -- he plans to marry a former staff member. Idle questions: Did his D.C. roommate, Bro. Asa, know about Bro. Tim's squeeze when he was piously prosecuting the president? Did Bro. Tim dishonor his public office with an intimate relationship with a young subordinate?

23. Ha! Senator Tim goes to Washington!
And he comes right back!

Clip from an article which ran before he lost his re-election bid:

He carried water for the GOP's six-year public relations war against President Bill Clinton, but now Senator Tim Hutchinson (R-Ak) in trouble with conservative voters back home. So, President Bush has come to his aid.

Hutchinson, a religious conservative best remembered for his chest thumping condemnation of Bill Clinton's morals is now beset by questions about his family values. An ordained Baptist minister, social conservative and recipient of a family values award from the Christian Coalition -- he went sideways on his supporters in 1999 by divorcing his loyal wife of 28 years to marry a much younger former legislative aide.

Love may be blind, but voters are not. Recent polls show Hutchinson losing to his Democratic opponent, Mark Pryor 51 percent to 41 percent. Pryor is the son of Arkansas' popular former Democratic Sen. David Pryor.

With control of the Senate hanging by a single seat, Republicans cannot afford the loss of a key senator like Hutchinson. So, President Bush's campaigning this week marks his fourth visit to Arkansas so far.

U.S. Warns Haiti Opposition Against Aristide Ouster
Fri Feb 13, 2004 05:39 PM ET

By Saul Hudson

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Colin Powell warned Haiti's opposition on Friday against ousting President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who was restored to power a decade ago by a U.S. invasion and now faces an armed revolt.

"We will accept no outcome that is not consistent with the constitution. We will accept no outcome that in any way illegally attempts to remove the elected president of Haiti," Powell told reporters after a crisis meeting with mediators.

Fri Feb 27, 3:08 PM ET

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration believes the best way to avoid an armed rebel takeover in Haiti is for President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to resign and transfer power to his constitutional successor, a senior U.S. official said Friday.

Facing intense political pressure, a Republican who was a guiding force behind the new Medicare law said Thursday he had cut off negotiations toward becoming the top lobbyist for the drug industry until he leaves Congress at the end of this year.

Rep. Billy Tauzin, R-La., said through a spokesman that he wanted to end criticism of his long-anticipated move to head the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America at a reported salary of $2.5 million a year.

Less than a year after declaring there was "no doubt the Iraqi regime
continues to possess the most lethal weapons ever devised," President Bush
and the White House began to openly "back away from its WMD assertions
today." The New York Times reported, "White House officials are no longer
asserting that stockpiles of banned weapons would eventually be found" after
their weapons inspector, David Kay said he "doesn't think existed"
after the 1991 Gulf War.

Officials: U.S. still paying millions to group that provided false Iraqi intelligence

By Jonathan S. Landay, Warren P. Strobel and John Walcott
Knight Ridder Newspapers

WASHINGTON - The Department of Defense is continuing to pay millions of dollars for information from the former Iraqi opposition group that produced some of the exaggerated and fabricated intelligence President Bush used to argue his case for war.

The Pentagon has set aside between $3 million and $4 million this year for the Information Collection Program of the Iraqi National Congress, or INC, led by Ahmed Chalabi, said two senior U.S. officials and a U.S. defense official.

Chalabi stands by faulty intelligence that toppled Saddam's regime
By Jack Fairweather in Baghdad and Anton La Guardia
(Filed: 19/02/2004)

An Iraqi leader accused of feeding faulty pre-war intelligence to Washington said yesterday his information about Saddam Hussein's weapons, even if discredited, had achieved the aim of persuading America to topple the dictator.

Ahmad Chalabi and his London-based exile group, the Iraqi National Congress, for years provided a conduit for Iraqi defectors who were debriefed by US intelligence agents. But many American officials now blame Mr Chalabi for providing intelligence that turned out to be false or wild exaggerations about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.
