Very Important, Who among us has recieved a letter or Or notice
thanking you for your donation to * and pickles, seems that I've seen a few post's of people who have recieved a letter and photo of the * family thanking them for thier donation when they had not sent anything. This could be some sort of corporate fraud on a large scale.

18. Send a bumper stick back in their postage paid envelope!
I sent the Somebody Else For President bumper sticker my daughter got me, since I don't have a car bumper to put it on.

28. Contact the FEC
Make sure the GOPers aren't laundering their money by saying they came from individuals who never really did donate to the GOP

2. Wasn't there a thread a few months back...
...suggesting we make donations of like a nickel, so it winds up costing them money to send us a thank-you note?

7. Great idea
considering that it cost them to put together the original solicitation plus the cost of the thank you note! There would have to be a LOT of us though, to compensate for $200 million!!!!!

But that would probably go right over their heads.

3. My husband got that
Edited on Sat Feb-28-04 09:39 AM by CalamityJane
He was also on Tom Delay's list for awhile. He is self-employed. Naturally, he drew nasty things all over the picture. He hates Bush and every time he seems him on TV he shakes his head and says, "He is such a prick!" because he can't stand rude people.

On edit: Why could it be a fraud?

8. I suppose it would be fraud if an entity (corporate or otherwise)...
was donating to the Rs in your name (with or without your consent). Or, at least a violation of FEC rules/regs.

4. A lot of these are actually
"Thank you for the donation you're going to send because I sent you a photo....right?" I think we've gotten "membership cards" to every left-leaning organization in existance (EMILY's list, Planned Parenthood, you name it...); but the cards only become real if we send them money.

I guess they think the picture will motivate you to send money?

6. No, this one said, "Thank you for the donation"
which was strange because hell will freeze over before we would ever give money to Bush.

a letter thanking you for your support for a R and asking for more donations? We received a letter and there's NO way we're R. We're calling on Monday to see why we received this letter and who changed our registration!

13. A violation of Campaign Finance Reform?
Someone who knows you will never make a donation contributes in your name because they have reached their limit under their own name.

Hmmmm! Could be some illegal stuff going on there. Maybe you should ask for your "donation" back. Can that be done? Would they have to return a donation?

29. Yes, that would be illegal
The law requires that individuals donate in their own names. Donations in someone else's name are known as "straw donors" and are illegal. That was part of the whole Gore Bhuddist Fundraiser "scandal"

10. Not unusual...
it's yer basic marketing. They buy lists from all over, just like any other junk mail operation.

I think I got one or two of them over the years just because they targetted my neighborhood.

I briefly considered sending them to the Post Office as a new variety of Nigerian scam.

11. My Dad received something like that.
Bush sent him a letter asking him for money and talking about his compassionate conservatism. He showed it to me probably because he would think it was funny. I doubt I will receive anything like that since I am a registered Democrat.

12. But they must be sending it to registered Democrats
because my husband is a registered Democrat and he got it. They must have gotten his name from some list of small businesses. They must have enough money to be sending out junk mail to millions of people the same way Delay was doing.

I thought there was some question about whether what Delay was doing was illegal or not, but I can't remember exactly what it was.

and assume we're all repugs.

I've gotten 2 or 3 letters for Tom DeLay and even got an invite for a $5000 plate dinner with Dick Cheney a while ago.

14. You can be a registered
Democrat and still get one. I got two of them over the last couple of years. A 8x10 glossy and another thanking me for my contribution. I wonder about the corporations using my name. I have been a democrat, a member of the democratic town committee and worked for a prominent democrat. How could they be so stupid? Maybe there is something to the corporation thing? Lets see!!

26. I've received two mailings from bush*/cheney* '04
begging for money. I am a registered Democrat, just received my renewed voter registration card in the mail. I can't imagine why I was on that mailing list. After a few choice words, I threw the mailings away.

32. That might have been what I got too
Last week I think, a photo and a letter. I tossed the letter and gave the photo to my son because he wanted to do something deliciously vile to it, like place it in the urinal at the high school.

Damn, I wish I would have read the letter. I am a small business owner and would never give and repug a nickel. I am also officially an independent. There must be a listing somewhere of campaign contributors, right?

Could some large corp or utility like the gas or electric company make a mass contribution in small chunks in the names of their customers?

Great catch!!

19. wondering if IRS gives them list of people who are self employed
Cuz I used to get a lot of GOP boiler room phone calls that always started greeting me by name and then thanking me profusely for all my hard work in the past for the GOP and knowing I wanna help the party for the 'coming election'.

Either they have lists of self employed from IRS (and I would like to know if that is legal) and assume anyone who is self employed is a repub, OR they just assume I am repub because or the area I reside in.

It would be good to check and make sure your name isn't on any sort of donor list they have to send to the FEC though. Would be nice to bust them if they are using others' names to cover illegal contributions. How do we get the list to check?

a mistake and would like to have your donation returned. Say if it isn't returned you will turn it over to election officials.
