Another GOP'r who says he won't be voting for Bush

A GOP friend of mine told me his Dad, who has never voted for a democrat in his life, will not be voting for "Boosh" - as he calls him in his Ohio accent. He's looking for someone to speak out against NAFTA. He's mad as hell about job losses.

My point is not that I suggested he take a look at Edwards, which I did, but that I am hearing stories like this one more and more, and I don't think it's a product of the DNC talking points machine.

Anyone else hearing any "buyer's remorse" out there?

1. Unfortunately, IMO, they aren't speaking strongly enough about NAFTA.

Both Kerry and Edwards talk about tinkering with it, not scrapping it and starting over.

IMO, if Democrats came out strongly against NAFTA and against illegal immigration, we'd retake Congress and the Presidency this year.

On edit: I know Edwards has really started talking about it more recently, and I am very happy to see that.

2. hearing it a lot at work

at least 3-4 times a day for the past week people have been coming up to me and expressing their displeasure with the smirk-boy

some have expressed regret for voting for him in 2000 and stated that they won't make that misktake again

others have asked me how they go about registering to vote or switching party registration

3. Another disgruntled Republican

My husband has some family members who are about as right wing as they come. This husband and wife have voted GOP in every election going back at least 30 years. This year they are staying home. They are disgusted with this administration and think that the Iraq war is about oil. They can never vote for a democrat so they'll be sitting this one out. I'm sure there are a lot more stories out there.

4. A good friend of mine

and a rabid republican very much does not want to vote for Bush. He feels Bush is an embarrassment to the GOP and can't stand how Bush avoids answering direct questions. The problem is he likes Kerry less. He tells me if it's Kerry vs. Bush he's sitting this one out, but if it's Edwards vs. Bush he's voting for Edwards. Either way, that's one less vote for Bush, and he lives in a key state.

That's what matters, although getting him to vote for our nominee would be the icing on the cake.

6. I get very nervous every time I read

one of these "another puke changes their mind" bits. I know that we are desperate for "good" news and will clutch at anything that can be viewed as a positive, BUT, we are kidding ourselves if we think that things are going well.

The media and money are still solidly on their side. There are still tens of million of 'Merkins who think that Bush* is doing just fine. And they have not even really started to fight back.

There is way too much time to go to start thinking that we are going to win in November. Complacency on our part plays right into their hands. I remember 2000 and 2002 and all of the posts that were so optimistic - every tic in the polls or random conversation overheard in the elevator was taken as a sign that we would win. This war has to be fought right through election day, without letting up for a minute.

Remember that the repugs will stop at nothing to hold onto power. And if they have any sense that they might lose, their actions will only get more extreme. And if we fight with anything less than total committment and effort and fail to use every weapon available, we will lose.

So, take some slight encouragement from "good" news, but don't get carried away. We cannot afford to take anything for granted or rest for one moment. You can be sure that the enemy will not.

8. I wasn't here in 2000 or 2002

but it isn't my impression that people are getting complacent. I have never seen so many people so motivated like this. People who in past years remained on the sideline are rolling up their sleeves and asking "how can I pitch in?" Friends who never thought about politics are asking all sorts of questions. I don't write this to show how confident I am that we will beat Bush, only to demonstrate that we are on the right track. What's ahead is more hard work and motivation, not less.

Your warning is a good one. It's an uphill battle.

10. There were 2 at our Kerry Meet Up last night

Both of these people are friends of mine. They both have always voted republican. This year they are both scared.......They have told me they have very grave concerns, and they feel this isn't just any election....they are very afraid that our democracy itself is at risk if bush* does a second term. They formed a "Republicans against bush*" group, and they are ready to work with our Kerry group. They don't care who the Dem nominee is...it could be a box of Jello and they would vote for it instead of bush.

I think once Rove's machine gets ahold of Kerry, it'll look like a choice between an incompetent, deceitful fraud and something worse, and a lot of these disgruntled GOP'ers will come home.
