It seems like many Dems in Congress are still afraid to denounce the Iraq war because they don't want to appear "soft" on terrorism. The implicit assumption is that because of 9/11 and the Iraq war, national security is one of Bush's strengths. It is my strong opinon that not only is this assumption wrong, it would be easy to turn it on it's head. I think national security is Bush's
weakest point.
Dems need to start saying this and repeating it often:
The war in Iraq has nothing do with the war on terrorism.According to Dr. Jeffrey Record at that notorious liberal think tank the Army War College, the war on Iraq is actually a distraction from the war on terrorism. (
http://www.carlisle.army.mil/ssi/pubs/2003/bounding/bounding.htm">"Bounding the War on Terrorism")
Or as General Clark said when he was still in the race, "I'm not criticizing him for attacking terrorists. I'm criticizing him for NOT attacking terrorists."
Bush's lies about Iraq are well-documented and part of the public record. The old paradigm that any discussion of military force is a dove/hawk, left/right discussion is obsolete (if it ever had any validity at all). It's time for mainstream Dems to stop being afraid of the issues of terrorism, foreign policy, and national security and take them head on. Bush has lost a lot of credibility and the American people are starting to wake up to it. It's time to pounce on this issue and exploit it for all it's worth.
