So what's so wrong with wanting to cut defense spending?
And being against the death penalty?
And wanting to stop the Vietnam war?

The latest talking point on all the conservative talk shows is that any candidate (specifically John Kerry) who even mildly favors these positions is "out of touch with mainstream America", and therefore has no chance of being elected.

What kind of twisted bizarro America do these sickos live in? I'm pretty sure that mainstream Americans are not bloodthirsty psychopaths who get hardons thinking about killing people and blowing shit up.

1. We NEED to spend billions...
so we can stop murderous thugs from hijacking planes with box cutters! Oh, and to win in Afghanistan (which we arent doing) and to win in Iraq (which we arent doing either) and to feed the Carlyle Group, Papa Bush's nice little company which is the largest armed dealer in the world. Apart from that cant think of other reasons.

2. Its UnAmerican
We have soooo many powerful evil enemies all over the world who want to destroy because they hate our freedom. And evil enemies here at home. At least that's what I'm told.

4. A possible answer to your question....
People have been fearful of outside threats since before WWII. The attacks of 9/11/2001 have made them even more fearful for their security.

The public has come to equate (through some very effective propagandizing) military spending with security. `Nuff said. More money spent, the safer we are, or so the public thinks.

No matter that aggregate military spending in this country since WWII is the greatest waste of public funds in the world's history. Anyone who suggests cutbacks is going to get slapped down, in the press, and in the ballot booth.

6. Its time to listen or watch elsewhere
If you go to the brothels you have your own "rewards". Its hardly a wholesome pastime. Cable channels are pay TV. If you like it wallow there. If you don't, quit it. Kerry can take care of himself.

7. According to George Bush and Dick Cheney 12 years ago
it was the reasonable thing to do.

"Congress has let me cancel a few programs. But you've squabbled and sometimes bickered and horse-traded and ended up forcing me to spend money on weapons that don't fill a vital need in these times of tight budgets and new requirements. … You've directed me to buy more M-1s, F-14s, and F-16s—all great systems … but we have enough of them."
-Secretary of Defense chiding the Democratically controlled Congress for not cutting more defense programs. January 31, 1992

"After completing 20 planes for which we have begun procurement, we will shut down further production of the B-2 bomber. We will cancel the small ICBM program. We will cease production of new warheads for our sea-based ballistic missiles. We will stop all new production of the Peacekeeper missile. And we will not purchase any more advanced cruise missiles. … The reductions I have approved will save us an additional $50 billion over the next five years. By 1997 we will have cut defense by 30 percent since I took office."
- President George Bush 1992 State of the Union Address.

It does a great job of examining the Republican smears against Kerry and his defense cuts.

9. too many credit and spend conservatives!
Edited on Fri Feb-27-04 12:55 AM by booley
it's amazing how so many of the accusations from the right to the left turn out to be projection...
Remember how the right loves to say Liberals want to throw money at a problem?

But what aproach do Cons have to national security? why, throw more money at the defense contractors, of course!

9-11 has only increased this ideology. even though it wasn't lack of funding or heavy weaponry that allowed terrorists to hijack planes. But you would never know that from the way Shrub and the cons are talking.

Of course, that defense contractors are big republican donators is just a coincidence.

They are like adult children, spending everything on toys and forgetting to pay the gas bill or clean the house

Cons know the cost to everything and the value of nothing, as they say!
