The DMCA. Your thoughts.
The DMCA was signed back in 1998. While I like Clinton, I do not agree with this. It does violate personal freedoms and it makes things lobsided in favor of corporations. It is not on par with the Patriot Act but still. First we need to win 2004. Then we must address concerns about this act to the new president.

Tell me what you think of the DMCA.

1. I despise the DMCA
It's enabled the RIAA and Diebold to exploit Copyright laws and establish a "permission culture" when it comes to using products. I'd love to see it repealed.

2. An infectious, virulent disease that's spreading into the world.
Bought a gizmo? Is it yours? No, it isn't.

Figured out how to fast-forward the FBI warning on a DVD? Or how to make your DVD player play discs from other region? Or that painting over a track on a CD will disable its anti-copy misfeature?

Talk about that to somebody and you'll be commiting a federal crime. THIS IS NOT HYPERBOLE, IT'S THE LAW. And the media industry is very busy strongarming every government in the world to pass similar laws.

This, and software patents, and copyright extensions, are EVIL.

4. IMO, it sucks
No way to make backup copies under it.

It's overly draconian. Because of it, I tend to stick with OSS for the most part.

5. It's also being used to abridge free speech
Just telling someone how to circumvent copy protection is now a crime. Publishing the news that you've found a vulnerability in software is a crime. Even linking to someone else's website which has information on how to circumvent copy protection is a crime.

This law is blatantly unconstitutional and someone needs to take it down.

6. Pure crap...I disagree with the whole concept of intellectual property
a person can only own something that is physical. Modern copyright law is a perversion of the founding father's original intent. Many Asian culture's do not share the greedy western view of mine, mine, mine. Credit for new knowledge is shared amongst a group and made public.

I will now put on my asbestos suit and wait for my impending incineration at the hands of unemployed music people.
