They sent my friend's mom an e-mail quoting Zell Miller talking about the deficiency in hearing the Word of God in this country. I helped my friend's mom with a reply, and here it is in all it's worldly glory: Below is my responce to the implicated and explicitly stated points of Zell Miller's speech:
Zell Miller failed to mention the social issue of dishonesty, and more specifically: the dishonesty coming from the Bush White House. He blasts rap music, Kid Rock, and Janet Jackson for "hurting" American society, but it would be far more damaging to America and its children to see a President lying so obviously and frequently about matters that affect America as a whole, and not just the authoritarian right wing of American society.
As far as the "famine of hearing the words of the Lord," my only assumption is that Zell Miller only watches Nickelodian and ESPN Classic, because all the rest of Television seems to put up somebody like Gary Bauer or Ralph Reed on their shows, and it's almost impossible to not see Pat Robertson on TV preaching the word of God. Thanks to the upcomming Mel Gibson snuff film, the networks and the "liberal" cable network CNN have been talking about the four Gospels like the world was at the end of the Tribulation. So Mr. Miller, who is a Democrat in the mold of Strom Thurmond before 1948, is either lying or ignorant, and I'm going to suggest he's both.
While I agree removing nativity scenes from public squares is incredibly stupid, the removing of the Ten Commandments from Alabama's Supreme Courthouse rotunda was a correct move, if only because Roy Moore was totally wrong in his defense of what he'd done. There is no historical basis for claiming that the Ten Commandments create the basis for American law. They did when the country was filled with witch-fearing Puritan Anglicans, but that stopped the moment the country was free from the rule of the pilgrims. If anyone ever claims that the ten commandments were revolutionary, ask "were the early Hebrews murdering one another without punishment before Moses came down from Mount Sinai?" Of course not. The Sumerians had laws against theft, perjury, and murder. The Egyptians did as well. There are more commandments regulating how to believe in God than how to act in public. Also point out that commandment #10, in its most literal sense, is Socialist, or anti-Capitalist.
As far as the Gay Marriage Amendment goes, I would think that divorce hurts children A LOT more than a child with two daddies or mommies. In fact, in the Book of Matthew (Matthew 6:32) Jesus says that divorcing a woman, unless she has been unfaithful, is forcing her to commit adultery, therefore forcing her to break the seventh commandment, and forcing her to sin, therefore committing a sin yourself. If Zell Miller weren't such an obvious hypocrite, he'd demand that divorce be made illegal, since Jesus actually spoke on this subject, and not on the subject of homosexuality. But of course he wouldn't since so many of the top "Christian" Conservatives committ adultery and divorce their wives, some while trying to impeach President Clinton! Newt Gingrich has the most digusting tale. He divorced his first wife when she was recovering from Ovarian Cancer, THEN while in the process of impeaching Clinton for adulterous acts, he cheated on his wife with a female staffer who was roughly 33 years his junior.
Because I'm Roman Catholic, I've always been taught that commandment #6 is "thou shald not kill," not "thou shalt not murder." So I don't know how well this argument works, but our "Christian" first lady killed a male friend of hers many years ago, because she was out driving drunk. Nowadays, that is considered murder, so I guess she's broken the sixth commandment. "Finding Christ" is all well and good, but those poor people in Midland aren't getting their kid back thanks to Laura's "conversion."
Back to the Bush White House, and Pat Robertson. George W. Bush claims he's a Christian, though reading the four Gospels, almost nothing he has done as President can be linked to anything Jesus preached. Tax cuts for the rich? Luke 18:22-25 make the rich sound unworthy of entrance to the Kingdom of Heaven, how can a Christian man resolve that their unworthiness to stand before God makes them worthy to pay less taxes percent-wise than those worse off?
Bush's war in Iraq is so filled with inconsistencies with what Christ and the Bible preaches, this e-mail would end up passing the maximum file size limit as set up by Hotmail. The most obvious of these would be the breaking of the sixth commandment, Thou Shalt not Kill. Granted he had help from the Project for a New American Century (PNAC, http://www.newamericancentury.org, ultra conservative group made up of pundits like John Podhoertz, William Kristol, and Bush cronies like Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Perle, and a host of others who benefitted from the Iraq invasion. They sent a letter to Clinton in 1998, essentially ordering Clinton to remove Saddam Hussein through use of force), but it appears he made his decision in January 2001, after he was appointed President by the Supreme Court. His constant claims of ties to al Qaeda and the development of WMD essentially broke the ninth commandment about bearing false witness upon your neighbor. He did honor his father though, part of the reason for going to war was because "this man tried to kill my dad."
In Luke 12:1-4, Jesus warns the Pharisees of the dangers of hypocrisy. The whole gay ammendment issue is ripe with it. George W. Bush says that the courts are making decisions that should be left to the will of the people. In 2000 the Supreme Court made a decision that was originally left to the will of the people. More people voted for Al Gore than George W. Bush, but the Supreme Court decided it would be easier to let their friend become President.
Pat Robertson might be the most obvious Christian hypocrites in the world. Even more so than Bush. Pat Robertson neglects Jesus' preachings of tolerance, and blasts Jews and Muslims almost daily on his hate-filled 700 Club. He ignores Jesus' warnings about the trappings of wealth, because he continues to steal money from his good hearted, though low intellect, followers. He preaches hate against gays, feminists, "pagans," and liberals. Pat Robertson is the crazy male Christian version of Ann Coulter (http://www.anncoulter.org, in case you want to see what I mean). What might be the biggest reason Pat Robertson is a hypocrite is his support of murderous dictator Charles Taylor, formerly of Liberia. Charles Taylor and Robertson set up a deal that kept Taylor healthy monetarily, and allowed Robertson to profit off of Liberia's diamond exchange. How "Christian" of him to support a murderous thug eh?
I hope I helped you in trying to enlighten your friends. They're probably good people, just getting information from biased sources like Fox News and the Churches.I'm proud I avoided using swears :D
