Very good one-liner about national health insurance...
The director of the National Zoo said she plans to quit and this blog entry is talking about that:

Proximate cause of Spelman's semi-departure was Wednesday's release of this report from the National Academy of Sciences that says the health of creatures at the National Zoo is declining because they are not receiving "annual exams, vaccinations and infectious-disease testing." Oh, so the animals are being treated like the 41 million Americans who don't have health insurance!

Kind of telling that there is more outrage over the health care of zoo animals than American citizens...

1. Well I think the repugs look at it this way
"Those animals are expensive, but whats an American worth? They are everywhere."

2. I don't think this should be set up as an either/or.
Both are shameful situations and they are not comparable.

The animals in the zoo are captives with no alternatives, and are fully at the mercy of Smithsonian Institution management, who are being paid well to take care of these poor creatures, and management is given a budget to maintain the health of the animals. That the animals are suffering because of mismanagement is horrible, and the fact that it has taken MULTIPLE exposes to get these problems addressed is inexcusable. I am appalled that the director is being allowed to stay on for another 10 months. They should get rid of her tomorrow.

3. I was unaware we had a National Zoo
Where is it located? I know there are a lot of State Zoos and Private Zoos but a National Zoo is a new one to me.

4. In DC, run by the Smithsonian
It's a very popular tourist draw. The giant pandas were wildly popular when they first came.
