I pity those DU'ers in South Dakota.
A bill this stupid would have been laughed at in commitee, and dumped in the trash here in Wisconsin.

Abortion bill passes final legislative hurdle

JOE KAFKA

Associated Press

PIERRE, S.D. - Most abortions would be banned in South Dakota by a bill that received final legislative approval Wednesday, sending the measure to Gov. Mike Rounds.

The state House agreed 54-15 to accept a Senate change in the bill that would make an additional exception for some women.

Although the House decided earlier that the only exception to an abortion ban should be the life of a woman, the Senate also included an exception in cases where a woman's health would be substantially impaired by complications of pregnancy.

1. I thought Roe vs Wade settled that legally?
Can a state create a bill that defies the supreme court's ruling? Or was it that RvW just struck down the federal law as unconstitutional, and the states are free to do whatever they want until it gets challenged on a federal level?

4. Roe V Wade did settle it.
States can not put restrictions like this on abortion.

But the fundy "keep 'em barefoot and pregnant" assholes have never accepted losing power over this.

So they keep trying with shit like this bill.

6. We're playing the same game...
but with a different law in a different court. California law currently forbids the issuance of same-sex marriage licenses and subsequent weddings, but the mayor of San Francisco is openly defying the law.

I'm not saying I disagree with him, I'm saying he should have the law changed first. If we flout the law, we can't gripe when Republicans do the same thing.

5. And how will they enforce it?
If they are going to have a law they have to enforce it. I am curious as to what kind of measures the state will have to take to enforce it.

8. "Pregnancy police."
All SD women will be required to prove they aren't pregnant, and if they are, they will have to report each month to the Pregnancy Police HQ to prove they are still pregnant. :argh:

10. the guy who doesn't want his genes flushed
course, he is just the kind of guy that no self respecting woman would want to see replicated. but we all make mistakes.
seriously, the prolifers will see that it is enforced, as soon as it goes on the books.

12. George Carlin said it best.
"Ever notice those who are so much against abortion are those you wouldn't want to **** in the first place!" :-)

7. I am sure an injunction is on the way....

This law will be blocked right away, until the supreme court decides what to do. Most likely, a lower court will declare the law unconstitutional, and the supreme court will never hear it.

Just a prediciton...

9. they played this game in illinois for a long time
it's been a while, but it goes like this-
pass a draconian abortions law, brag to your fundie base, fear not that your daughter of girldfriend will need an abortion, because- prochoice groups will immediately challenge the law in court, and no one will be the wiser. just pay no attention to that bill collector behind the curtain, counting up how much the whole charade costs.
