This anti-gay constitutional amendment is not necessarily a sign of desperation. They know they have to pander to their base at some point to get them energized for the election. This proposal is a cynical as most of their other "initiatives" they know it has no chance of ever happening, but in the short term its politically useful to them. I say "try" becuase they would not get the full backing of the military, since most military officers have high respect for the Constitition. But they would get enough backing, augmented by College Republicans and other assorted brownshirts, that the country would quickly divide along a "red/blue" line that would very closely resemble the Missouri Compromise borders.
