Some more history of Haiti
A little more history on Haiti. It is celebrating it's Bi-Centennial of Independence. In 1804 Haiti had a pitched battle with Napoleon's forces for their country. France at that time was extracting more resources (treasure) from Haiti than from all thirteen colonies of the US combined. Haiti defeated Napoleon and declared their independence. Because of France's huge financial loss it was forced to seek monies from somewhere else and that came about as the Louisiana Purchase. If not for Haiti winning it's independence we may never have gained half of America that we enjoy today. For five or six decades Haiti ruled itself. In mid to late 1800s the US Marine invaded Haiti and the US took over as ruler. We placed many dictators in Haiti. Baby Doc and Papa Doc were just two of the most current ones. If you know your history you know how brutal they were. It wasn't until late nineteen hundreds that Democracy was allowed to happen and Aristide was elected by the majority of the people in Haiti. For the previous hundred years during the dictators rule Haiti was actually ruled by eight to ten ruling families. Huge Land Barons who worked hand and fist with Papa Doc and Baby Doc to suppress the people and take the resources for their own. Because Aristide wanted these elite to pay taxes on their holdings and to hire locals the elite rebelled. They staged a coup and threw out Aristide. They did this with the aid of the first Bush administration. Clinton came along and actually restored Democracy to Haiti. Now Bush* is here and the same thugs that threw out Democracy in the nineties are at it again with the support of this Administration. These elite are mostly white and filthy rich while Aristide and the people are black. Haiti has been extremely important to America and we should not just sit back and allow Democracy to be thrown out the window just so a few may benefit.

2. Interesting post. I do have one question.

The Louisiana Purchase was in 1803, I thought, so how could have it been necessitated by events that happened in 1804?

4. The fight for Haiti actually lasted for some time
Edited on Thu Feb-26-04 12:50 PM by Bandit
and France put a lot of financial resources behind the battle. I may have been off a year in the Purchase but the cause for it is correct. It all stemmed from the battle for Haiti

5. Yep. The battles in Haiti appear to have been in 1802-1803.

Official independence was declared in 1804, apparently, but the battles that were fought with the French appear to have been in 1802 and 1803.

So there indeed could have been a connection with the Louisiana Purchase after all.

Thanks for the interesting post.

6. thanks for this info.
the Black Caucus was kicking it up last night! They talked about how they had met with Powell, Rice, and Bush* and called for them to do the right thing and support Aristide. They also talked about what you've just posted. Thanks you did a better job than I could.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters who was just in Haiti last month/week? all but said our own US Government is allowing the Haitian peoples democracy to fall (helping) it's people to be murdered by thugs/rebels a blood bath is the words she used.
They are turning Bush's so called 'supporting of democracy' (Iraq) rhetoric on him.
I love it because it's the Truth!
