RNC convention protests.
I heard someone say here earlier that there will be 1 million people protesting the Repub convention in NY this year. Can this be true? Will there really be that many peope? I'm just wondering what people are thinking because I've never been to a real protest.

3. 1968?
There should be massive protests, I would guess. Think of all the New Yorkers who breathed in dangerous crap after 9/11 because Whistle Ass said it was safe. Add in all the people who will come from out-of-town. If the police don't react right, this could be very dangerous for participants.

However, I doubt the NYPD are great fans of Bush at this point.

6. Betcha the FDNY/ firefighters aren't too keen on * either. . .
If they and the NYPD join in on the demonstrations (thru their unions)
the Repukes are in real deep ca-ca.

Besides, the firefighters are probably gonna throw their support to Kerry anyway (thru Firefighters for Kerry)

5. Anybody know when the US Open tennis tournament is?
My parents and I were talking about attending the US Open this Summer before I come back to college in Canada. It's always around late August/early September. Who knows, perhaps some international tennis fans from Europe and Australia will join in the protest! If I'm there during the tournament/protest, I look forward to seeing you all.

7. not to slam tennis
but the US open is one of the biggest corporate boondoggles in america.

I know, I used to work the US Open.

If thats what it takes to get your folks to spring for the trip, great. But come to NYC because your country is in crisis, NOT for entertainment which fills the coffers of the very corporations which so threaten our republic.

9. Well, since I'm not 18 yet
and I don't have much money of my own, if I'm going anywhere they have to pay for it, which means they'll probably come along.

11. Ranking fears
Understandable. A couple of thoughts to consider:

1. Even if less than 1 million show up, any violent confrontation will occur at the "front". There will be thousands upon thousands of families, mothers and children, older folks, the lame and disabled in attendance. You need not get tangled up in confrontation, and yet make your presence count.

2. What scares you more? Being in NYC during that time, or a future where we are too frightened to assert our rights and opinions in our own land? Comes a time where each needs to decide for themselves where the line needs to be drawn. If we do not do it at the RNC, where will we ever do it again?

See you in the streets.

12. You're right - Thanks for putting it in perspective.
Visions of Chicago and Seatle were dancing in my head. I can over come my fear.

My 13 year old grandaughter wants to go - It's time for Gram to put up or shut up.

13. Don't worry...
My 13 year old grandaughter wants to go - It's time for Gram to put up or shut up.

There will be lots of organizers and volunteers there to help you out with directions and helpful tips, plus there will be emergency assistance available just in case it's needed. Might be a good idea to visit NYC on a "normal day" though, to familiarize yourself with the general area.
