I did some Googling on this a week or two ago, and did find a couple of suggestions that there might be more to Bush's stint with Stratford than was apparent on the surface. But the story didn't seem to go anywhere. If Hopsicker's taken it up, perhaps more will emerge.
Here are a couple more links, for those who are interested:

Still, for some Americans, it's all been worth it. Robert Gow, 65, discovered the Yucatan 20 years ago, when his Houston company invested in the peninsula's leading poultry hatchery. He bought Hacienda Xixim in 1985, using the company's local subsidiary as a holding company to circumvent then-existing restrictions on foreign ownership of ranch land.
At the time, the hacienda was all but covered in jungle vines. Under the foliage were the crumbling walls of a manor home dating to the 1580s. Working with local artisans, Mr. Gow rebuilt the house and reconfigured the old water tank into a backyard swimming pool. The hacienda's irrigation canals were partially reopened to allow Mr. Gow to indulge in some new hobbies. Today, he's raising bees, and planting experimental strains of bamboo. He estimates he spent under $100,000 fixing up the property.
"Everyone said I was mad," when he bought the place, he recalls. "I just said what all real-estate people say: 'It needs work.'
