Passion of Christ...another divisive strategy
Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 05:19 PM by stepnw1f
Well...I see the media gives adequate amounts of attention to real issues. I mean...we all know how persecuted the Christians really are. I mean, how dare we allow Jews express their opinions about a movie that may increase jewish resentment. Somebody's got to defend the Catholic Christians?!

BTW - how many practicing catholics reside in America? It appears today that everybody in the world is Catholic.

I thought this was an isssue between the churches? Or Ebert or...

The point I'm trying to make here is that I see way too many headings here talking about an issue the Republican Party has once again made into a national media bonanza, even the pope responded.

Do you support this devisive issue or do you not? I believe holding the Bush administration accountable for treasonous crimes against its own people is a much more important topic. Isn't it enough that the media already covers this political garbage while people die each day?

3. It'll be over by Easter
Seriously, this non-issue will be gone just in time for the next non-issue.

I figure they've got these things planned to come one after another all the way up to November 2nd.

4. Are you hiding in my house,
listening to me? I was just ranting to my husband about the fact that every time I turned the tv on today to try to catch some news (like, perhaps about the latest helicopter 'crash'), all they were talking about was the damned movie! (take that as a pun or not, as you wish)

If I want to see the movie, I'll frickin' go to the theater! If I don't want to see it (which I don't), I don't need to hear about it day in and day out.

The one interesting comment I heard this morning was from an emailing listener on CNN who referred to the movie as a 2+ hour 'snuff film.' I think I'll pass.

So, LET'S HEAR SOME NEWS, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! :(

5. catholics are the biggest single denomination in the US.
"christians" are so fragmented, that they dont really register until you aggregate all of them.

but - i think theres smoke, and fire here...

i mean yesterday, they came for the gays.

today, they are stirring the old "christ killer" crap.

yay!

6. excuse me??
I can't make any sense of your post.

You do know that Mel Gibson's views do not represent mainstream, or post-Vatican II Catholicism?

The film seems to be most popular among fundamentalist types. Read the conservative press - they're the ones glorifying the film. Given the role conservative religion plays in the Bush administration, it IS relevant.

8. Exactly...
Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 05:43 PM by stepnw1f
so why does everybody need it to be the top story of the evening? It really is not an important issue compared to what's happening to our country and the rest of the world. Religion has become way too publicized. If people want a religious war, I have a perfect place for you in a wrestling ring, where Fox can root for the Christians. Leave the rest of out of it. This not a Republican vs. Democratic issue. This is another attempt to merge State with religion.

9. you missed my point

You attributed this issue to 'the Catholics'.

Seems to me, 'The Passion' is more of an arch-conservative, fundamentalist issue. A lot of Catholics are not interested in this film at all, as Gibson is not a mainstream Catholic.

This is a diverse society - what is relevant here is that you could try not to make culturally ignorant statements.

10. No I didn't miss your point..
In fact the media is making this look like a Catholic issue, so take the issue up with them, not me.

7. It's a grievous affront to all the honest people who make their living

promoting movies.

Now that Mel has shown the way, what producer will ever pay for publicity again?

Just send your script to the Anti-Defamation League!

I wonder if they're charging reading fees yet, you know their mailbox must be full
