Cheney's service record next to be attacked?
Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 04:10 PM by Sliverofhope
From Calpundit, via National Review Online:

"There's going to be a massive attack on Dick Cheney soon," says one source who keeps up with such matters. "The Cheney story of deferments makes Bush look like Audie Murphy" — a reference to the much-decorated World War II hero.

Cheney, who was born in 1941, received a series of draft deferments as a student, a husband, and a father during the Vietnam era. By the time the draft became most intense at the end of the 1960s, he was too old to be called. At the time of his confirmation hearings as secretary of defense in 1989, Cheney reportedly said he had complied with all the rules, and would have been happy to serve if called, but, "I had other priorities in the '60s than military service."

5. Imus has been vicious with Cheney in the morning
He said they should be feeding him gravy, ribs and pork chops. Making reference to the old heart problem. :nuke:

6. Cheney - typical republican
He places ZERO value on the worth of the life of an American Servicemember - typical conservative. (Bring it on Freepers!) His running away from military service is an issue and should be touted for all to hear. Then, Americans can make their choice. His business transactions are more important to him than our fellow Americans who get shot at to ensure his transactions are secured. IT MUST REALLY SUCK BEING A CONSERVATIVE.

8. Here's something interesting I read about big Dick's draft...
dodging..... He took several deferments as a student and then, I recall, as a teacher. In the late 60's they started to get rid of all the deferments. In about '66 or '67 they announced they were doing away with the marriage deferment. They announced a date after which your marriage would no longer get you out. There were long lines to Justice of the Peace offices on that last day. Life Magazine carried a front page pix of the long lines of couples waiting to get married on the last day you could get the deferment.

Guess who also got married that day?

Big Dick "Duix2" Cheney.

11. According to the info I have
Cheney was married in the summer of '64 while the marriage deferment was eliminated on August 26, 1965. I was really hoping to dig up evidence to support what you said but that is what I found. Do you have other documentation? I'd really like to be wrong and the public details regarding Cheney's marriage are a bit fuzzy.

15. I wonder if the poster is thinking about deferments for fathers
I think there was something about Cheney's first child being born exactly nine months after the deferment was changed from married to only if you're a father.

17. I don't have links..........
I'm just repeating what I read somewhere a few years ago. If those dates are correct, tkmorris, then the info I read was wrong. I just remember that cover of Life Mag with the couples lined up to get married before the deadline.

I'm sure someone will do the story on Big Dick's Viet Nam service.

16. This is what I found on their wedding date.........
After earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from Colorado College, the not-yet-Mrs. Dick Cheney found herself still without a bread-winning spouse. Wisely hedging her bets, she took refuge in post-graduate education, earning both a Masters Degree and Ph.D. in the profoundly non-practical, yet supremely lady-like academic province of poetry studies. Fortunately for Pre-Mrs. Dick Cheney, a life of scholarly spinsterism was narrowly averted, when one fine July evening in 1964, she would cross paths with Mr. Dick Cheney, an old high school acquaintance. The two would dine together the next evening at a Roy Rogers Family Restaurant, then venture out for a night of dancing and sloe gin fizzes. Two weeks later, they were married in an intimate ceremony at a Las Vegas motor chapel. Mrs. Dick Cheney would go on to disgorge two daughters, Mary and Elizabeth, the latter of whom would fulfill her Godly obligation to couple with men and produce grandchildren in a naturally biological fashion. http://www.whitehouse.org/administration/lynne.asp

10. Chicken Cheney.

What about Cheney??

Better yet, instead of the off topic chatter about Clinton's single student deferment lets look at the master:

Lets talk about Chicken Dick Cheney and his heroic efforts to support the boys overseas.

Chicken Dick Cheney found out that his first student deferment was so fun that he got a second one, and a third, and a forth.

It was such a joyous time that Cheney racked up two convictions for drunk driving.

Alas, all good things come to an end. Cheney found himself about to be ineligible for anymore student deferments.

Things must have looked bleak to the boozing party animal in those last protected - defered - days.

Then, suddenly, all of Chicken Dick Cheney's prayers were answered. The government had come out with a new paternity deferment for fathers and expecting fathers.

Yep, you guessed it. Cheney put the fat to the fire--the meat in motion-- and shazzam, Cheney quickly found himself eligible for the paternity deferment.

It must have been such sweet irony to him that while so many young men felt they had been screwed into going to Viet Nam, Dick Cheney had gotten screwed to stay out.

19. Thanks. Upon review, I see that the way I posted that
may give the impression that it's my words; however, it is taken directly from the Cheney page at awolbush.com, an excellent site ("build it and they will come").

14. I always thought
that Cheney's actions were more deplorable than Bush. Especially given his super-hawk philosophy since he first entered politics.
