BBV: making progress, keep calling Senators to co-sponsor Voter Confidence
Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 12:18 PM by Eric J in MN
On Feb. 23, 2004, Senators Bill Nelson (D-FL) and Charles Schumer (D-NY) became co-sponsors of The Voter Confidence Act, a bill to make elections more accurate by requiring voter-verified paper-ballots from electronic machines.

Please call your Senators and ask them to co-sponsor S.1980, The Voter Confidence Act. If you called before, please call again.

Suggested words:
Hello, my name is <your name> and I'm calling from <your town>. Can I speak to someone about voting-rights issues?

I'd like to leave a message for Senator <the Senator> to please support The Voter Confidence Act, S.1980, to increase the accuracy of elections.

Thanks. The other Senator from Massachussets has expressed concerns about BBV, but maybe he's too busy to become a co-sponsor.

I meant that John Kerry is busy campaigning and maybe that is why he hasn't become a co-sponsor of S.1980, The Voter Confidence Act, yet.

14. Heard something interesting today...
Rumor has it that the House may be in a position to pass HR2239 - that the support for the House bill is wider than the cosponsor list is telling us... Looks like they are simply waiting to see the Senate get it together.

So the Senate is absolutely the place to focus energy.

Part of the issue is 3 Senate bills - we need to pare that down to one: Graham's. He has the potential for bipartisan support that the others may not have. So we need to ask Clinton to pull her S1945 bill, Boxer too. There are complexities in Boxer's (S2045) bill that would make it hard to implement by November, and while we appreciate your work, we need a bill that can go into affect this year...

http://www.verifiedvoting.org/senate_bill_comparison.asp

But then we need to gain support for S1980, Graham's bill.

So make your calls! Try this number 1-800-839-5276

But better yet, go to their local office and talk to their staff. http://www.verifiedvoting.org/states.asp Face to face meetings, from many constituents, could turn this thing.

We still have time to get HR2239/S1980 implemented - go see your Senator or Representative today please.

16. This is the front line in the battle to preserve democracy!
Two co-sponsors is 97 too few. Call, write or e-mail your Senator today and demand their support for this important measure.

The only thing you have to lose is your vote!
