Wanna bet violence against gays escalates?
Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 07:37 AM by mopaul
It's a sick but ugly possibility, given how some 'super-republicans' get so bent out of shape over this trumped up non-subject. Republicans by their very nature need an enemy to rally against.
Muslim terrorists, immigrant invaders, dope smokers, liberal crazies, abortionist doctors, and now, again, homosexuals.

Homosexuals are now the new enemy Du Jour for the extreme right. Remember only recently how anyone who looked 'foreign' was living under the threat of violence following 9-11. Men with turbans were attacked and some killed, Hindus mistaken for Muslims. Indians mistaken for Arabs, it didn't matter, some redneck simian throwback would get drunk on whiskey and 'kicked some Ay-rab ass'.

Frothing homophobes will now start seeing gay men lurking in their backyards, menacing their children, lesbians stalking their wives.
Anyone who they as gay will be a target for violence. And the violence will be brought about by millionaire, power-mad politicians, who would gladly kill a few gay people, or a few World Trade Center employees, or a few folks from Afghanistan, or Iraq, what's a few dead people compared to achieving the better good, and making a profit?

bush now reminds me of George Wallace standing in the school doorway preventing black students from entering. The repubs know how to shake the cages of their most devoted and easily manipulated voting block, the Christian conservative crazies, who first wreaked their rage on America for the Sainted Ronald Reagan. Republicans don't give a damn who is gay, or not. Republicans only want to be in charge, and they don't really follow the teachings of Christ at all.
But as long as several million born-agains faithfully trot to the voting booths, the g.o.p. will continue to throw them raw, bloody meat.

And I'm afraid that some gay people will have to make the ultimate sacrifice for all of our sins. This proposed amendment, meant to polarized the nation like never before, will bring out seething, primal hatred and devisiveness, and violence always follows right behind.

3. It occured to me.
My daughter cried yesterday when shrub came out in favor of that amendment. I told her to be careful, that the hate crimes would start to escalate, and justice would be hard to find.

I suggested she have a way to leave the country, if necessary. They don't pick on big, bad gay men who lift weights. They hurt little guys like Matthew Shepherd, and gentle young women.

If anyone gets killed or injured, we need massive civil disobedience. Maybe we need it now, before anything happens. I am really afraid for gay people.

4. we should support our gay brothers and sisters
at this troublesome time. we need to do exactly the opposite of what they are now planning. they will gladly bring the country down, and cause bloodshed, to retain their fascist grip

5. Cyborg Arnie's already predicting it...

Just what "civil unrest" does Arnold Schwarzenegger believe will be unleashed if San Francisco does not stop issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples?

"All of a sudden, we see riots, we see protests, we see people clashing. The next thing we know, there is injured or there is dead people. We don't want it to get to that extent,'' the Republican said in his first appearance as governor on a Sunday talk show.

Well, so far, there haven't been any riots or even any serious disturbances. Couples have been getting married apace, though as the story notes, there have been some attempts to disrupt the ceremonies. And they have been handled simply and without incident so far.
...
One has to wonder why Schwarzenegger could speak so irresponsibly. Why is he so fearful of something that has only been hinted at so far? Unless, of course, he's saying he expects to see the disruptions turn violent in what has so far been a classically nonviolent exercise in civil disobedience. Even if this is not a subtle signal to call out the dogs, these kinds of remarks can easily be interpreted that way by the sort of people whose political consciences have mostly been acquired from multiple viewings of Conan the Destroyer.

6. What do you mean "trumped up non-subject?"
It's certainly a subject of debate, though they are wrong on it.

7. smoke screen, distraction, diversion, deflection,
divisiveness, all designed to polarize our base and engrage us like the abortion issue used to. the amendment is a non issue. like the proposed amendment protecting the flag, a non subject.

8. I disagree
We have done more to make this an issue than they have. Every gay marriage and flouting of current law has escalated this debate. They are simply taking advantage of it.
