I have just been watching this guy on Larry King and he is very impressive. He makes me proud to be a Democrat. This guy could (should) be president some day. This is the first I have seen or heard of him. I suspect he will go places in his political career.

1. I agree...
I don't live in SF anymore, but I used to, and now live about an hour or so South.

I met Newsom briefly a few years ago - he seemed quite bright. Naturally, I'm thrilled with what he's doing now. I think he's handling it very well.

Unfortunately, if you'll look at the posts here from Election Night, you'll see most people here reviled Newsom as a right-wing corporatist. Go figure...

2. yes, i remember that
newson actually grew up without much. he made up all by himself. didn't have money growing up. do you remember the attacks on clinton for campaigning for newsom ? i remember those . the guy who ran against newsom, matt gonzalez, a green also supported same sex marriage and was of course more liberal than newsom. but i think some of the attacks on newsom may have been unfair.

4. Right-wing corporatist...
Well, I think that was by comparison to who he was up against in the runoff, Green candidate Matt Gonzalez(?)...

And, truth be known, while Gavin's great on social issues, he's not the guy I'd want in there swinging the bat against NAFTA or against massive entertainment/telecommunications conglomerates...

Basically, a lot of people on here would rather see Greens get elected than DLC (and he is DLC).

6. BUSH BACKERS BUY ADS FOR NADER IN SWING STATES

Ralph Nader's goal to get George W. Bush elected got a push from a pro-Bush committee yesterday, the Republican Leadership Council. According to a 10/27/00 AP story, the RLC has made an ad consisting of footageof Nader attacking Gore and is buying $10,000 worth of ad time to be used to keep the Bush lead in Oregon and to move Bush ahead in Washington and Wisconsin, two states that are up for grabs. The ads will begin Monday. "Advertising experts say they can't recall another time when a major party organization has run ads helpful to a minor party candidate." The RLC hopes to make similar ad buys for Nader in Minnesota, Michigan, and Maine, three other states that Bush hopes to win with Nader's help. This new Republican strategy to elect Bush by backing Nader is believed to be a winning idea, according to the AP: "In this extraordinarily tight national race, one or two states could make the difference in who is elected."

The AP also noted that the RLC ad buy for Nader comes at a very good time for the Green Party candidate, since he doesn't have the money to afford the cost of the ad campaign the Republicans are launching for him: "Nader, running a low-budget campaign, is not currently airing any television commercials of his own and it's possible that the RLC will end up spending more on pro-Nader media than Nader himself." The AP reports that "The Gore campaign labeled the ads deceptive. Vice presidential candidate Joe Lieberman said he was confident the public won't be fooled. 'For Republicans to be putting Ralph Nader on television in a paid ad, certainly might lead your average observer to be cyncial,' he said." According to Mark Miller, the executive director of the Republican Leadership Council, "the ads are partly a response to commercials being run by the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League." The AP reports that when asked about the ads Nader said that outside groups have the right to run them. Nader's lukewarm response to news of the ads is seen by some as giving further credence to the charge that a vote for Nader is a vote for Bush. --Politex, 10/28/00

Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 04:53 AM by NNN0LHI
...crap that I started about a Democrat. Did you forget that? And if it is so important for you to slam the DLC in this thread or any other that I start with your green spam, then yes, expect the truth to come back your way on occasion.

9. Hehehe...
"Basically, a lot of people on here would rather see Greens get elected than DLC (and he is DLC)."

That's a slam?

I dunno, maybe there are some hard-core greenies on here that have rubbed you raw with their own repetative propaganda or somesuch, but I'm not one of them, alright?

Newsom seems like a decent guy and a decent politician... and I'd rather have him as mayor than Hahn (I'm in L.A.), and he would prolly be one of my top choices as of the state's political elite for governor.

That being said, I stick by my original statement that he's not exactly the guy I'd want in there to deal with issues like NAFTA or massive conglomerates undermining free enterprise.
