Today I Got A Check From A Lawsuit Against The Music Industry
Drinks are on eeyore tonight!
:toast:

I vaguely recall signing up online for a class action suit a while back, and I got a check in the mail today for $13.86.

At issue was price fixing by the major record labels, and they were offering anyone who purchased music during the contested time-period to join the suit at www.musiccdsettlement.com.

The settlement is surely a pittance compared to the millions (billions?) they have made by keeping CD pricing high, but I guess it's something.

Here's the letter...how much do you think the lawyers made off of this one?

Dear Oregon Music Purchaser:

As Attorney General for the State of Oregon, I am pleased to enclose payment for your claim in the settlement of the Compact Disc Minimum Advertised Price Antitrust Litigation. This lawsuit was brought by the Attorneys General of 43 states and three territories and by counsel for Private Class Plaintiffs on behalf of purchasers of music CDs. In accordance with the terms of the court-approved settement, payment is being made to music purchasers who filed a valid and timely claim.

It is a pleasure to bring this matter to a satisfactory conclusion and return value to consumers who purchased CDs whlie the challenged pricing policies were in effect.

Hardy Myers
Attorney General of Oregon

2. I got one too
It's nice to get a check in the mail that's actually a check, not part of a scam to switch your long distance phone service or enroll you in some shopping cult.

3. I lost out..
My brother and sister in law just got their checks today too.

I was told at the time to sign up for it, but having never heard anything about this before I didn't take it seriously, didn't believe it was real and so I didn't take a moment to claim my $13.86.

Even though it is just a little bit of money, I am still kicking myself for not claiming my share of the cash.

16. depended on the number of people who signed up for the refund...
had nothing to do with the lawyer fees...$20 was the maximum...

12. So why the gratuitous bitching about the lawyer's fee?
Had it not been for the lawyers, you wouldn't have gotten a DIME. Zilch. Zip. Nada. Looks to me like they got the standard 1/3 contingency or maybe less.

13. Quite true
Not meaning to bitch, actually more curious than anything. I just know that lawyers that bring class action suits often do pretty well. Hell, they got done and deserve to get paid! Do you think it was independent lawyers, or did the Attorneys General from the states handle it themselves?

Seriously, no offense intended counselor. I withdraw the question.
