what better defense of marriage....
..... could there possibly be than two adults who love each other getting married?

Though it's a little bit late, the whole "frame the debate" moniker "defense of marriage act/amendment" needs to be switched 180 degrees - the defenders of marriage are those who want to extend it to include the greatest number of consenting adults. To limit it to subgroups would be to attack marriage.

I say the democrats need to come out as staunch pro-marriage supporters. Let the biblethumpers hack away at beastiality and pedophilia - I dare them to win on that line.

3. I am with you lioness.
My partner is already taking a long break from DU, and I feel I am going to follow her move very soon.

I am burnt out and tired of having defend our rights as human beings to people who consider themselves liberal.

9. I Hear Ya
As A Straight Man I Am Appalled That There Are Actual ADUTLS That Claim Not To Be Discriminatory Against Gays Just Gay Marriage

What A Friggin Crock

Take Comfort In A True Genius' Work

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

5. nah - this website's good enuff....
preaching to the choir gets old after awhile y'know....

my suggestion, on re-framing the debate, is aimed specially at homohaters who are trying really hard to not be outed - and bush just made it extra-really hard.

by framing the issue as pro-marriage (the inclusive kind), you force the homohaters to say something like the following: "I'm not antimarriage," - that puts them on the defensive - "I'm just against GAY people getting married" - that marks them as discriminatory homohaters.

There's nothing wrong with Gingrich's list and rhetorical tactics, after all, I'm just trying to encourage the right side to use them. Winning is just as important as being right, as Gore proved.

8. Take heart
I think marriage should be between two loving people. Doesn't matter what their gender is. Heterosexuals have made a shambles of marriage, what with rising divorce rates and soaring out of wedlock pregnancies. I figure that true, committed gays and lesbians can set a good example for us heteros to follow.

More power to you in this fight. I stand beside you.

10. Count me in too
If I could convince myself that all the bigots here at DU are really just undercover freepers I would feel better, but right now I just feel frustrated and betrayed.

I know there are plenty of good people here too, but it is so f-ing discouraging to keep hearing the same tired rw talking points HERE.

13. It drives me crazy that some people think that civil rights should only
Edited on Tue Feb-24-04 09:19 PM by kayell
apply to their favorite oppressed minority. Blacks have it worse than gays, so gays shouldn't speak up. Jews have it worse than Palestinians, so they shouldn't speak up. We haven't passed the ERA, so why should we work on this. :eyes:

Is there some reason that we can't acknowledge that all struggles for human rights and dignity are important? It absolutely drives me wild when a group who has been horribly persucuted then proceeds to do the very same thing to someone else. It really does damage to any belief I have in the abilities of human beings to evolve.

2. Very few issues can be boiled down to love vs. hate.
This is one of them.

Let love rule supreme.

4. It's bogus to impose personal beliefs based on religious notions on
a secular society. The repigs will not win with this
issue, but they will have a good time hurting people.
F**k them I say.

7. The language used by the AWOL crowd
Edited on Tue Feb-24-04 08:34 PM by salinen
is similar to the language used to describe OBL. Gays are terrorist will be said some time next week by DeLay or Santorum, or the hired killer Chambliss. Without the threat of Communism, the party of hated must have fresh meat.
