"Marriage" Is Not An Issue For The Government.
It is a religious term and ritual. Legally, it is only a union between two individuals.

IMO the constitution DEMANDS that religious 'Marriage' not be the business of the government.

Why the hell can't we just make every union between two people a 'civil union' in the eyes of the government.

The ritual of "Marriage" can be left up to the individuals at a religious ceremony.

If your church allows gay marriage and you don't like it, go to another one.

Simple.

2. marriage is controlled by the government
Okay here is the flaw:

Marriage is controlled by the government. The states say who can get married and allow religious institutions to complete the "ceremony" of marriage--but the certificate is issued by the state.

The only way to fix it is to pull the word MARRIAGE out of religion and make them use "CIVIL UNION"

3. I think if the language is changed the perception will change
and Bush and others who would insist that a marriage is "sanctity" a term implying that a god looks down from heaven and "blesses" a marriage, would have no secular leg to stand on to persecute others who do not and cannot accept the Christian religon's definition of a marriage.

5. I respectfully disagree
My Marriage Certificate was issued by the Church. My license, as required by law, was recorded by the state. The license has no record of the "event" taking place. It only records our names and that we passed our blood tests.

Make everything the government has anything to do with civil unions. That solves the Constitutional issue and it nullifies the religious arguments.

Marriage is something people can elect to do afterwards - at the church of their choice. As far as the government is concerned, that's got nothing to do with them.

6. this is just distraction number 1,349,935.
He doesn't give a shit about marriage, or the sanctity of anything. He's more worried about the DoD starting criminal charges against Halliburton/KBR. It just takes that story to the back page.
