As a gay Democrat
it is really disheartening that the Democrats will not stand up for gay marriage. I know in terms of gay rights legislation Kerry is better than Bush, but they both essentially have the same position on marriage. They both oppose it. Edwards really has no gay rights background and said he opposes even civil unions in his home state. I will hold my nose and vote for Kerry, I am not sure I could vote for Edwards and I know Bush is terrible and we need him out but I don't know if I can force myself to volunteer for Kerry when I know he opposes one of my most basic rights...it may not be a big issue to other Dems but someday i would like to marry someone too!

1. They'll turn around one day
As of now, sadly, it's political suicide to say you support gay marriages in an election year.

2. IMHO Kerry does stand for your basic rights
He believes you have the right to be together legally with the one you love. The term marriage, I believe, is more of the religious term for civil union.

8. Question
Don't flame me I have a sibling who I adore and her partner for 10 years. They have stated that it is not important for it to be called "marriage" it is the rights and benefits that go along with it. They have said that they don't care what it is called as long as it is equal to a marriage license. Why does it have to be called "Marriage"? I would think that the gay and lesbian community could think of another name for marriage that would be better suited, bearing in mind that marriage started out as a husband owning his wife. I would think that there is a much better and loving name for the insitution of family for a gay couple? Why not come up with an expression of love for the gay couple and have them just add it to todays marriage license ie Marriage/? license check correct box.

3. Yes, Kerry and Edwards are enabling
Let the gay bashing begin. Homophobes, start swinging. I lived through 1993 and I might make it through 2004.

6. My letter to Kerry
Let me get this part out of the way right off. I've been happily heterosexual all my life, married to the same woman for 35 years and father of two heterosexual daughters.

Now, for the important stuff: John Kerry must confront this constitutional amendment against gay marriage bullshit forcefully and immediately. He can even recycle the eloquence he mustered against the DOMA. But he CANNOT equivocate on this issue. Not only because it is an outrage, but because it gives him the perfect opportunity for the third time in his life to act heroically.

7. I totally agree with you
except I'm not a Democrat : ) Unfortunately, I will have to vote for one.

allow me to relay how excited I was when Clinton was elected (my first time voting!) and then becoming thoroughly disgusted with the whole "don't ask, don't tell" debacle...:puke: I was like, wtf, I helped elect this guy???

now the Dems are selling out on equal rights even before the election.
