Imagine Dubya as President in the 1950's
I'm going to be getting married in two weeks. I am white, my fiance is Asian. With * proposing an amendment to ban same-sex marriages today, it made me think about an earlier post here at DU in which a Gallup poll from 1958 showed disapproval of interracial marriages at something like 96%. Should an "overwhelming consensus" be allowed to deny civil liberties? Makes me glad Dubya wasn't President in the 1950's and makes me disgusted that he's trying to make my gay friends second-class citizens today.

2. Yep my mom is 77
and her first great grandchild is asian american. I find that delightful and so does she. Change comes slowly, and it happens slowly as people wrap their minds around it. Too bad so many people are still stuck in the 14 century.

10. Think about him in charge in the 1930's . . .
We'd still be in the great depression, except more greatly depressed.

11. Yeah, the picture in my mind of * and McCarthy lifting a few brews
together after a rough day of terrorizing pinkos and communists and liberals makes it seem that * was just born too late.

Roy Cohn would've been SO jealous . . .

14. He never would have been elected in the 1950's
People though Kennedy would lose in 1960 simply because he mentioned he was Catholic. Politicians may have professed some kind of faith back then, but nowhere near the level that Bush has.

I was feeling pretty sour earlier, but a lot of your posts have cheered me up.

Bush and McCarthy sharing a brew. God, that's funny!
