Gay Marriage Is A Very Good Idea

Things are so bad in Washington these days that we have to look to the States for progress instead of the Federal Government. This runs counter to the trend of American history.

Officials in Massachusetts and San Francisco are expanding democracy by allowing gay people to get married. In Washington, however, some want a Constitutional amendment to stop these unions.

Democracy is about expanding the rights of individuals. While collective action and strong government are essential in securing the blessings of liberty, the rights of the individual are the foundation of free society.

This possible new amendment poses a unique threat to our freedom. If the ultimate law of the land can used to deny the full rights of citizenship to any group of people, then no rights are secure.

Which is what they're doing here.

Bush's lies and crimes have nothing to do with gay marriage.

I say we dodge this bullet, keep attacking Bush on his record of lies and crimes, and fight this fight later.

A basic principle of civil rights is at stake here. To "dodge this bullet" is a cowardly stance for the Democratic Party. If we can't take a stand when civil rights are at stake we deserve to lose. Besides, we can win this issue. The public is ambivalent about gay marriage but most do not want an amendment. More pictures of happy lesbian and gay families will out the truth about same sex marriage - there is nothing to fear here and anyone who is telling you different is lying for their own agenda. We need to frame it as a civil rights/personal freedom issue - and tie it into all of the other ways in which Ashcroft and Bush are taking away individual rights. This is what politics is about. It is time to fish or cut bait.

Absolutely. It is a civil rights issue.

Maybe someone should point Mullah Bush to this little piece of text.

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

Let's rid ourselves of dangerous radical activist politicians. Support the Constitution. Support the Freedom to Marry!
