7. Who Cares About His Base?
Let him invigorate them all he wants, the moderates will be turned off completely by this. No one except fundie nutjobs want to tinker w/ the constitution to LIMIT only CERTAIN people's rights.

3. If this amendment passes would it be the 1st time ......
a constitutional amendment was passed that reduced rights of some of it's citizens? That'd make it very REPUBLICAN, now wouldn't it?

I guess you could say the Amendment prohibiting alcohol use was a reduction of rights limited by an amendment.........

4. A Tactical Mistake
When you go on an audition, never let 'em see you sweat. In calling for a constitutional amendment - which is very serious - Bush is showing desperation.

A big loss for Bush. A big win for liberal thinking.

5. I hope it sinks him.
Here is a would-be dictator using powers he should never have to appease some members of his following. This is wrong! To make this constitutional is unconstitutional. It is entirely political and will deprive a segment of the population rights that are open to everyone.

6. When all else fails, run on hate.
He can't run on his record, it is dispicable. It can't run on the future or a vision, because he doesn't have on (unless it is a future of constant state of war). So, he has to run on hate. It is what he and his conservative base do best. They have mastered the art of hatred.

I hope it backfires. Big time.

9. They should leave her out of it.
Will they be writing to Gephardt's kid next? I think it's wrong to try and pull these politicans kids into the fray.

11. yes, it's wrong to pull the Kids in
too bad there isn't a way to highlight the fathers' hypocrisy without pulling the kids in.
It's a delicate balance.
The right wing has no qualms about pulling the kids in or about decisions regarding family....

19. She's not a "kid"
She's an adult, and has made her sexual orientation a matter of public record.

20. well
considering she's working on her Dad's election I feel that she' has placed herself in a position for these kind of questions.

" how can you support someone who is willing to deny you rights and freedoms that are guaranteed by the 14th amendment to the US constitution?"

12. This is the right's answer every time they can't get their way.
How many times do you see Democrats calling for a Constitutional Amendment?

The republicans hate the constitution because they hate America and it's freedoms.

13. The best defense is a good offense.....
.....If Bush* wants to "protect the sanctity" of marriage, force him to go all the way. Demand that he use the language 'between 1 man and 1 woman for life'! See how many people back a Constitutional ban on divorce.

Anything less would be hypocritical! :)

16. Well marriage in this country is in real trouble.....
.....half of all marriages end in divorce! We need to demand that Bush* do something to protect the sanctity of marriage! :)

From http://www.divorcereform.org/rates.html

2. RAW NUMBERS. The Center has released total state and regional marriage and divorce numbers (not the same thing as rates) for the years 2000, 1999 and 1998.
The total numbers of U.S. divorces (excluding the non-counting states) reported finalized annually are 957,200 in 2000, 944,317 in 1999, and 947,384 in 1998.
The total numbers of U.S. marriages (including those states) reported celebrated annually are 2,355,005 in 2000, 2,366,623 in 1999, and 2,267,854 in 1998.

3. PROJECTION/PREDICTION. This is the Census Bureau's often-cited "50%" rate, the proportion of marriages taking place right now that will eventually divorce, which has since been revised downward to roughly 43% by the National Center for Health Statistics but was moved back up to around 50% by the Census Bureau in 2002, with even more ifs ands and buts than usual.

Does anyone want to post this on Freerepublic?
As long as he*s going there anyway we might as well force him to go all the way!

15. Another weapon
of mass distraction. This is a clear attempt to divert attention from Iraq, the economy, his (lack of military service), and his assault on environmental protections. * can't run on his record so he is creating new issues to run on.

considering 2/3 of senate and house need to approve and 3/4 (i think) of states, I don't see it happening.

18. remember the flag-burning amendment?
Back in the 90s, after the Supreme Court ruled that burning an American flag in a protest was protected speech, the republicans pushed an amendment to protect the flag. Apparently, they wanted a wedge issue to use against democrats.

Several years ago, they reached a point where they actually had enough votes to send the thing to the states. This wasn't really the plan, evidently, so Sen. Mitch McConnell (Orc-KY) switched his vote to oppose it. (McConnell represents the tobacco interests, so he framed his vote as based on the principle of free speech. McConnell has always been a vigorous opponent of campaign finance reform such as Feingold-McCain. Free speech is great if you can afford it.)
